slide release problem on Savage pump shotgun

I bought a HIAWATHA Model 567 Series E, 20 Ga pump shotgun, marked
SAVAGE ARMS, Westfield, MA, Serial #B947819. (3"chamber)
The slide does not release upon firing. The magazine loads correctly, the rounds are chambered OK, and firing is normal....But,to work the slide after firing I must manually press the slide release button at the back of the trigger guard.

is this a complicated repair? and where would i go to find disassembly instructions.

The slide release is activated by a stud on the side of the hammer which catches a spring loop on the release. Check to see if the stud is present on the hammer and if the spring loop is there. I have seen the loop missing or bent so that it did not pull the release hard enough.
