Hey guys, i just bought a Kimber Montana but have no idea if i should use a leather sling or some nylon type sling. On my wood rifle i have a 1 1/4 montana leather sling i really likw but feel a synthetic material sling would be more appropriate on a synthetic gun? What do you guy use on synthetic rifles? I want to keep it light.

use a nylon basicly cause its doesnt weigh much, really shouldnt matter whatever you preffer

I you can find one of the Uncle Mikes Mountain slings with the grippy material on the shoulder area they work well. They are hard to find and do not confuse them with some without the tacky stuff on them. They are terrible and won't stay on your shoulder well

Weight is 3 oz including hardware compared to 6 oz for my 1.25" Montana sling.

I bought the 1.25" Montana first, my 2nd was the 1" version which I like much better, it only weighs 4 oz., about the same as the Uncle Mikes nylon. I use both, actually like the leather strap better other than in wet weather.

Ive got the 1.25 Montana sling on my wood kimber and really like it as well. Wouldn't mind trying a black 1 inch montana sling for the synthetic rifle but think the nylon might be better. Ill check out the uncle mikes one. thanks.

I like the neoprene slings that grip and stretch. Some have a couple shell loops but I don't find them particularly useful.

Whatever decision you make consider the straps weight. Your rifle is just a hair over 5 lbs. Many of the straps suggested weigh 1-2 lbs. Some of the padded leather slings that are wide at the top that I've weighed have gone over 3 lbs. That just doesn't make sense on a 5 lb rifle whan you can get something that works just as well that only weighs 3-6 oz.

They help soften the weight of a 10-12 lb varmit gun, but with any gun hamper off had shooting. Try aiming with a 2-3 lb pendelum swinging from side to side under your rifle.

I use and would recommend both of the slings mentioned by jmr40 and when I want get my rifles all purtied up I use the Browning horsehair slings, which I have in black and brown. If I were to buy just one sling for a synthetic rifle it would be the montana sling 1" in black. I have several of them in black and brown, all 1". They are nice looking, easily adjustable, relatively light and strong enough to use as a shooting aide. The slip knot stays put very well. I have used the montana sling in rain and snow and it has held up fine, however if I lived and hunted frequently in a really wet environment or I wanted to set up the rifle as light as possible, I might favor the uncle mikes mountain sling. The UM mountain sling is not as good of a shooting aide though. Personally, I don't use the UM mountain sling much as I prefer the montana sling.

I have a cheap Remington nylon sling that I move back and forth between my 870 and 700. It's lightweight, durable, and relatively comfortable...
CApighunter.

That homemade paracord sling is awesome! Im going to look into making one myself although i really dont know how. And jmr40, your right on with getting a lightweight sling. It makes no sense to put a 6+ ounce sling on a rifle that will weigh 5lb 10oz with scope mounted.

Thanks!

The sling is easy as can be to make. Go on YouTube, and look up some different weaves (this is the Cobra Weave). If you'd like, I can go into detail (probably best via PM).

Im definitely going to order some paracord and try it. I think that's just an awesome idea and it should be pretty light. How long did you make yours?

I think I made a 40" sling. I THINK it took about 80' of paracord total. Also, I just read recently that 1.5' of cord goes into one inch of sling, which makes sense.

I also very much agree with this view.

I just found a company that makes them. Sandstorm custom slings or something. I think ill just save my patience and spend the $35 on one. The 36" double cobra looks good!

Personally I have this exact sling on 5 of my field rifles. I've tried leather, and the cheap neoprene's and about everything in between. This however gets two thumbs up from me especially if you hike alot, the comfort stretch reduces the fatigue, the material doesn't care about the weather or how many years you have it on there, and the grippers keeps it right on your shoulder. Last time I was out at cabelas I found their last two of these hidden behind the newer cheaper p.o.s.'s they had in front of them and didnt think twice about grabbing both even though I didn't have a use for them at the time...because I knew I would. Definitely recommended, or at least something similar. They're called Butler Creek Comfort Stretch Alaskan Magnum

Yea those are the ones, I have picked a bunch up at pawn shops, yard sales, auctions as well as on used guns. They are on the guns I use.

Thanks for all the input and opinions fellas. I decided that the paracord idea was pretty cool so i went ahead and ordered one from sandstorm customs. I got the double cobra weave in OD green and ACU camo in the adjustable hunting style size (34"-38" i think) with quick detach swivels. Looks like uncle mikes swivels. I know itll be a tough and good looking sling, i just hope its not very heavy. Kinda spendy but i have a feeling im going to be very happy with my decision. Thanks again!
