Is it safe to shoot slugs through an 18" Remington 870 and if so are there are slugs that are more suitable than others.

Right now I have Rottweils and Remington Sluggers on hand, would both of these be ok?

Of course it is safe to shoot slugs in your 870. That & buckshot is what the 18" Cly bore barrel was designed for.

Any Rifled Slugs are fine, including your Rem Slugger and Rottweil BRENNEKE style slugs.

What you don't want to shoot are Sabot type slugs designed for use in rifled shotgun barrel.
They won't stabilize in you smooth-bore barrel.

Thanks RC, after this morning's disastrous trip to my favorite desert range I won't be shooting the 870 for a while anyway.

i shoot bird ( for training), remington 1oz slugs, and s&b "00" buck in my 18" remington 870. as a matter of fact the slugs are very accurate and i can get good hits out to 50yds+ (50yds is as far as i have gine so far but i plan to go to 75 and 100yds) and the shotgun has just a bead front sight that is all.

I love to shoot slugs out of my improved cylinder 870. Last week I shot 2 boxes of the new (to me anyway) Fiocchi slugs--an ounce at 1560 fps (advertised--I didn't take the chrono out, though I should have):

Using the 870's rifle sights and shooting from a knee I shot a couple 3-inch groups at 50 yards. I'm confident it would shoot tighter from prone or a bench, but every shot was a SMACK!!! to the cheek and shoulder--and a big irrepressible GRIN to follow. Not going to bench them unless I have to, and I don't have to!

So brace yourself, shoot some slugs, and enjoy!

I use Remington Sluggers and prefer to shoot them offhand :uhoh:. Yeah I know some people are not so bright, I also joined the Marines without being drafted. I can get about a three inch group out of my 20 inch barrel at fifty on a good day.

The 18" and 20" Model 870's were designed for police work, and about all they shoot is 00 Buck and slugs. I carried one in my patrol car for 26 years, and that's all I ever fired through it, or was fired through any of the couple hundred other 870's my department owned and still own.

Hope this helps.

Three inch Slugs

Ah, three inch Remington Sluggers, I have three boxes of five in my magazine closet right now. My 870P handles them with aplomb but I see no reason to beat myself up. They will be there until a bear tries to break down the door. :p
