Small Bore for Small Game

With scopes, I'd definitely make sure to get something with 50 yard parallax or adjustable parallax. The scope I have on my Savage Mark II FV is a Mueller APV, I wanted a little more magnification than you're looking for though. They have a very good reputation over at Rimfire Central, which was a big thing that pushed me their way. With that combo, I've managed to shoot a group a shade over .5 MOA, not shabby for me not being a great shot. They do have a 2-7x APV now as well, haven't used that one myself though.

Can't go wrong with the Leupolds either.

I just acquired a Bushnell Nitro 2.5-10X with side focus for $210. It is really clear and can be dialed back for close shots at squirrels in the woods and rabbits in hedge rows. I have a Leupold 2.5-8X that is really nice, but will cost you more than the Bushnell Nitro.

I ended up buying a bunch of accessories online today, and after looking at reviews of scopes til I was dizzy, I decided the Leupold VX Freedom 2-7 Rimfire was easily everything I needed, with not much compromise. So I bought one. I'm sure plenty of scopes would have done everything I needed, but hopefully I won't be questioning this one later on down the road.

I have more 22 rifles than I care to admit to. A couple are high end but vintage. Only one semi auto - marlin 60, as everyone should own.
The best - marlin 39
My favorite - savage 72 (aka Stevens favorite)
Nothing special about the savage , it's just slim, accurate and fun. The count of squirrels , opossum, skunk, racoon, pest birds, gophers, and vermin for that gun is in the hundreds.
Good luck!

I have several rimfire rifles and handguns and have hunted smallish game/varmints with .22LR, .22 Mag, and 17HMR. Lately, the .17HMR takes me out to the fields/woods near the house more often than anything else. I don't hunt rabbits, but often take varmints like red squirrels, woodchucks, and coyotes. On walkabouts lately, the .17 HMR has been my favorite and was lucky to encounter two coyotes inside of 100 yards in a blueberry field. They had been sleeping and each got up individually to look across the field at a few turkeys to my left. The first one was about 40 yards or so and it surprised the heck out of me, as I sat on an old concrete bench we'd retired to the edge of that field.

Anyway, I got both of them with that "puny" .17 and am really impressed with its killing ability, considering the size/weight of the projectile. However, the relative power of the cartridge causes me to not shoot anything in trees when I need to shoot high into the air, even if the maximum range may be about the same as a .22LR. It has also killed a few woodchucks in the back yard quite effectively. They're hard to kill quickly due to the relative toughness and ability to absorb damage and still make it to a den.

Favorite walk-about rifle is a Heavy-Fluted CZ455 American .17 HMR, with a Bushnell 3-9X scope. It shoots just under 1" at 100 yds, and holds steady both offhand or rested, due to slight forward-weight bias. I bought it used with a standard.22 Mag barrel, but really love it with the fluted heavy barrel, especially for offhand shooting.

I've decided the time has come to get a scoped rimfire rifle for small game. Probably mostly rabbits and squirrels.

I was thinking a Tikka T1x, but they're not available in left handed. Perhaps that's not a big deal though. A right handed gun would certainly be preferable for my wife (I'm sure she'll use it, at least for plinking).

I know a lot can be done with .22lr, but I've also heard good things about .22 mag.

So I'm pretty open to suggestions. I'd like to hear some thoughts from seasoned small game hunters.
As a LH, I own one rifle that is a LH version - a 7mag; all my others from bolts to semis are RH; not a big deal, and I kinda like it because I can hold the gun by the wrist in my LH and work the bolt with my RH, same for my shotguns

2nd post here...Had my Marlin 39A out yesterday and was reminded how much I love shooting it. That rifle never fails to impress me. Shot it with a friend of mine who shoots competition so he brings that spirit to fun shoots. He had never shot my 39A before and he shot it as if he was competing; meaning that he shoots rapidly. He was totally impressed. I am certain that such a rifle would be well suited to a lefty.

Mine was awesome while I had it, except for one thing - the firing pin was constantly breaking and Marlin kept sending me new ones; it just got old, though, so away it went
