Ever have a simple victory that boosts your confidence?

I bought a Norinco ATD last night for $241 out the door. I got it home, detail cleaned it, and realized it wasn’t working properly.

After a little research and some tinkering it was blatantly obvious that the cartridge stop was MIA.

$13 and a quick drive to Midway, I was back in business. A few passed with a file and the Browning SA-22 part dropped right in.

I was initially disappointed but with a little work turned out to be a nice buy.

Nice. I had to look that up, not familiar with that 22lr rifle.

Browning’s SA22 is a little above my paygrade for what it is. The Norinco is pretty slick and I won’t feel bad banging it around in a pack.

Congratulations on a job well done. It's nice to be able to make and modify things to work well, isn't it? That is a capability that I suspect is less common in younger generations, unless it involves hacking or patching devices.

Good on ya! You got a good deal and an easy fix. I have an ATD myself, and it wears a little 2x20 scope. Makes a fine little plinker, and has accounted for its share of squirrels. Congratulations, and enjoy!

For what it’s worth I’m under 30 but you’d be surprised. A lot of my cohorts have found out a degree job with student loans doesnt pay enough to pay contractors, gunsmiths, and mechanics.

Youtube is a major advantage on step by step guides. I like Numrich schematics, and I like Hanes manuals. But Youtube is like having your uncle standing next to you except he doesnt get pissed when you ask him to repeat the steps 15x in a row!

I plan on adding a cheap 4x airgun tube scope. For the shooting I do with this type of rifle Ive found I dont need to see a squirrel’s hairs.

I used to have an ATD 22 rifle. Back when they were new, and guns were still coming in from China, they were about $100, which is why I had one. It was OK, but the adjustabilty of the factory iron sights was poor. Putting better sights on it is a good idea.

They are, as HB pointed out, a copy of a John Browning design from about 100 years ago. Remington made them in the US, and FN made them in Belgium for a long time. The Chinese ones aren't as nicely made, but they are serviceable, much newer than the Remingtons, and much cheaper than the FN's.

Like many of the rifles Browning designed, it is a take-down design; that is, you can remove the barrel. Train travel made take-downs popular back then, as I understand it.

Norinco quality always surprises me. They put together some nice firearms.

I got a Norinco SKS "Ranch Rifle" (or that style) that was known to be problematic for a price I still feel guilty about. Guilt, guilt, guilt. I may owe 30 days in Purgatory for that one.

Didn't work. FTFeed, FTFire, FTExtract, FTEverything.

I detail stripped it and cleaned it thoroughly (watch out for springs to leap out unexpectedly) and it worked 100% after that.

Since I conveyed most of my guns to my sons, that one remains as my standard HD rifle. You may laugh, but this OT prefers long arms without protuberances hanging off them at all odd angles. And I've got a jillion and a half loaded stripper clips for it, so up yours, Mr. Wimpassed Legislator, with your ten (or whatever number) round mag limits.
