Greetings folks,

I was in a gun shop recently and they had some Smith & Wessons that I found intriqueing. I've never been into S&W's but I must say when viewing the 5906, it looked like a very robust pistol. Please don't hog this thread with the political stuff regarding S&W. Anyway, does anyone have opinions on the gun itself? How does it compare to other high cap 9mm designs such as the Sig P226, Beretta 92, etc.

Thanks for your time.
Ken

I've shot all three of the guns you mention, and I would rate the 5906 as comparable to the Sig P226 and the Beretta 92FS. Strictly MHO, but I think the 5906 is a little heavy for a 9mm, and I would prefer the P226, expecially if I were inclined to want to carry it (FWIW, I own a P228 that I would not part with under any circumstances). These are guns that should be available to rent at your local range, and I wouldn't hesitate to try out all three, and then see which one works best for your needs.

I had alot of experience with an older 5906, not the TSW designated one. Carried one for about 2 years, and fired just under 8,000rnds thru it without any problems to report. I changed the recoil spring and mag springs at the 4,000rnd point, but I only did this for my own piece of mind. I prefer the P226 since I'm not real fond of slide-mounted safety levers. As for durability\reliability, you couldn't really go wrong with the SW. Only negative I could say is it's heavy for a 9mm, but it also makes recoil barely noticable.

I have the S&W 5906 and it's been a great handgun. It was a police trade in. No malfunctions to speak of and I've shot 10,000 rds + thru mine. Recoil is light due to the weight of the gun and hi-cap mags are still pretty cheap and easy to obtain. I shoot mine in IDPA - SSP. It's a quick and accurate 9mm and reasonably priced. The Sigs and Berettas are great weapons too but for the money and availibility of hi-cap mags you can't go wrong with the S&W 5906 TSW.
