I am contemplating purchasing a S&W 64-5 4" revolver. It is a 6 shot .38 caliber K frame stainless steel. It was built in 1993 so it is pre lock and pre MIM parts. I have not seen it in person only in internet picts. I will be giving it the once over several times next week when I actually can have it in hand. The seller is offering it for $425. It has the square butt wood grips. In the pictures that I have seen, it looks to be in excellent shape.

Is this a gun worth looking at? Is the price in line with where it should be? Would this be considered a good buy? a great buy?

The fact that it does not shoot .357 does not concern me.

Thanks for any input or opinions.

It was not long ago I could see this gun selling for $250 but with today's crazy prices I can see $425 being asked for it. Heck, I think it was about 3 years ago when I bought a very nice M64 snubnose for $250.
You'll have to decide if you want to pay the price.

The old adage, "You can't pay too much for a good gun.", is certainly true. So is it's corollary, "You can pay too much for a turkey!", however. If it is LN in condition, has great lock-up/action, and the owner has the box, etc, it may be a great deal in today's marketplace.

My 4" 64-8 was bought NIB from a local store's security guard buy-back stash 6/08. They were all $309 - I chose the one that was unissued/latest model - as they called it, the 'undesired model', and they threw in the s/t. It has the two-piece barrel, MIM parts, IL, etc - and broke in to be a fine revolver. It's first year was spent in the range bag as an every trip .38 plinker. After that first year, I put the nice Ahrends grips I had on it back on the revolver I borrowed them from and it's OEM Goodyears back on the 64, loaded it with +P Remington R38S12 (158gr LHPSWC's), and put it in service as a house gun.

I still sneak it out to the range, of course. It is a delightful example of a fine revolver. I just wanted to state that, IL or not, a 64 is a keeper! Retrospect is 20/20 - I should have bought two of them! I hope it works out for you!

I bought this same gun a couple years ago for $250 OTD at a local pawn/gun shop. I would think around $350 is the max on this one.

Sounds a little high to me as well. See if you can't get the seller down a bit; maybe somewhere around $350-$375?

And from a buyers perspective of course you're bummed that it's not a .357 (we know you're not but you don't tell the seller that), but for a little financial consideration on the selling price you would be willing to go with the Model 64. Worth a try at least.

Is the price a little high? Maybe, maybe not. But if you like the gun, don't let $50 keep you from buying it.
It'll be more expensive next year.

S&W prices are in a very inflationary phase right now. Model 64's on Gun Broker are going for $325 to $500, plus shipping, depending on condition and who knows. I don't think your price is bad considering you won't have to pay shipping which can run from $15 to $40. It's still worth trying to talk the seller down, or getting him to throw something in - like ammo, storage case, or a holster.

The -5, if I'm not mistaken, was a transitional model and has the MIM trigger but forged hammer with hammer mounted firing pin. A lot of the 4-inchers were round butts. Some, not all, have the "Nike" style cylinder latch. It's possible that gun has a round butt hiding under a pair of square butt conversion grips.

It is not a "bad buy" at that price. The aforementioned inflation will take them beyond that in short order and it is a "bird in the hand" so to speak.

If you are looking for a simple, RUGGED .38 spl. shooter that will eat +P all day long, you won't do better. The pre-lock thing is your insurance of getting your money back down the line, but you will probably never sell it if you are looking for a revolver of this description.

Also check J&G Sales. I bought one the last round and its a great revolver.
I picked one of the DAO 64's up off of JG Sales a few years back, and it has been a great shooter. Price was right then too, around $250.

Ive been keeping an eye out for another, and have noticed this round, their prices have jumped up a good bit since I bought mine. They are going for $359-$489 now.

Just saw a pretty good shape 65-2 4 inch S&W for sale. $449.

I'd get it but I have a Service Six 4 incher already and a 681 S&W!

Oh, well.

The K frame service guns are real good. Only ones better are the 3 inch versions... but that is another story.
