I've been wanting a 686+ pre-lock revolver for a while now, it appears the -4 was the first one with the 7th round, the -5 is the last one without the integrated lock.

It does seem as if a -5 is at least only as scarce as hen's teeth whereas the -4 is seen about as often as the mythical free lunch. My main concern with a -5 is that S&W made the move to the frame mounted firing pin with that model.

I wonder if that change resulted in any problems which may have been worked out in later models? I realize they also went to MIM trigger and hammer but I'm less concerned about that.

Though I mainly shoot a -6, the -5 is my preferred variant. I'm personally not aware of any issues specific to the -5, or any other issues resolved in the current -6. I'll be interested to see if anyone knows of any, though.

The only issue I'm aware of with the frame mounted firing pins in the 686 is in the 2002 and later models.

According to my gunsmith, S&W placed firing pins that were too short to guarantee reliable ignition, into all of their revolvers that were eligible for sale in California. This was allegedly done to pass California "drop tests".

I've Googled it and there appears to be some truth to my gunsmiths tale.

The reason I know, is that I had a 2.5 inch 686-5 that didn't go bang reliably. My smith installed a Cylinder & Slide firing pin and I had no more trouble. But I traded it for a 4 inch 686-4+. ;)

The 686-4+ is a fine revolver well worth waiting for. Should you come upon a 686-5+ I would buy it, were I you. Install a Cylinder & Slide firing pin and call it good!. Good luck with your search! :)

It's ironic, the one I'm considering is from a seller in California

I too own -4s, -5s and -6s with the -5 6'' being my preferred range and hunting 686. I see no relative difference in triggers or accuracy.

The -5'a will have a pinned front sight if that makes any difference.

That will give you a little more variety if you choose to change sights.

Well, that one was not to be. I've learned not to chase non-rated buyers online, they always seem more interested in winning than the price of victory. With tax, s&h and transfer that would have been a $1k revolver for me, a bit on the high side I think.
