Can someone please tell me how old this gun is? It is a S&W 38 S&W Special CTG. Serial # D309228. I'd like to know what it is worth and the year it was manufactured. Also, where I could get parts for it. Thanks in advance for the help!!

You didn't provide enough information to make a clear identification. The "D" series of serial numbers were used on 5 different models. The serial number D309,228 dates from 1969-1970. Swing out the cylinder and the model number should be stamped on the frame, under the back end of the barrel. (Example: MOD 10-?)

What's it worth: We would need to see a few good photos of it - unless you are experienced at grading firearms, a brief written description isn't usually helpful. Photos are!

Parts: Mechanical parts are available from Numrich's or Brownells. You really need to know what you are doing before performing any gunsmith work on the gun.

Model number

I did not see that the first time :). The Model # is 10-5. I'm not interested in selling the gun just wondering what it may be worth. I'd say it's about 6 out of 10 if I was to explain what shape it is in. Also, is it true I should not use the +P ammo in it? Thank you for all the help!

.38 Special +P ammunition was standard issue in the New York City Police Department for the Smith & Wesson Model 10 revolver before switching to 9mm pistols.

Let's say it's got 80% finish left and original grips in like condition, I'd estimate the value $225 to $250 in today's market. The 10-5 is also called the "Military and Police" model, the original gun that debuted the .38 S&W Special cartridge in 1899. It has been very little changed since then and is, along with the SAA and 1911, one of the most enduring and popular handgun designs ever.

+p is fine to shoot in it.
