I have a 686 at S&W for a recall and thought also to change out the red ramp front sight with a gold bead partridge. I have trouble in some light with the red on a stainless gun. Any experience with the gold bead on a S&W? Thanks

I have A gold bead on A 625 four inch. I'm very happy with it.
You may have A problem snagging the lining of what ever holster you use.
I rounded the corners of the front sight to the same radius as the bead.

Thanks for the info.
S&W sent me a letter that my 686 would be ready in 3 weeks.
So I called to get the gold bead sight installed and low and behold they said gun had been shipped same day I recieved letter.
Anybody replace a red ramp with any other front sight?

Yes. My PC625 came with one. I could never get a clear sight picture with my old eyes. I swapped it and all my "red" ramp sights for Patridge style blades.

www.sdmfabricating.com has gold bead blades that will work on your 686 if it is pinned.

www.brownells.com or S&W can provide Patridge or Baughman style ramp blades.

Good Luck...

Joe

My 625JM had a Patridge with a gold bead. At the indoor range where I shoot I couldn't really see the bead, but it was visible outdoors in sunlight. The gold bead didn't hurt, and I could take it or leave it.

The Patridge sight shape on the other hand is a definite boon on a target gun. It gives a clear, sharp sight picture.
