And the .41 magnum factory ammo is expensive
This should be in capital letters! I bought my Model 57-1 in the early '80s for $260. 44 magnum ammo was $14 per 50 rounds for 240 gr JHP or JSP and less for 240 gr SWC. 41 magnum ammo (special order) was $35 per 50 for 210 gr SWC. This is why AND THE ONLY REASON that I let it go! I don't hand load and nobody else had a 41 around here then. I wish I had it back!!!

My first N frame Smith was a 6'' 57. I traded it for a long barrel 44 29-2 for shooting ihmsa. Fast forward 30 years. In the past couple years I 'discovered' the 41 mag cartridge. I now have a 6'' nickel and a 8 3/8''blue one. The ammo bit is a real drag. cost a dollar a pop to shoot the things. I am now shooting reloads from Ga Arms. Cant seem to find jacketed stuff at any price. The Nickel one is a great shooter. The blue is unfired. Wont stay that way as soon as I find a cache of ammo.

My first M57 was a blued six-incher. Later, I bought "Long Tall Sally" an M657 with an eight and three-eighths inch barrel, and a nickled M57 four inch. All those guns were used. In a fit of .41 Magnum aquisitiveness I also bought a new Marlin 1894 FG in .41 Mag. Three Rugers, two Redhawks and a New Model Blackhawk with the "200th Year Of American Liberty" inscription and a four and five eighths inch barrel came along with I took a break from Smiths for a while.

I slipped a three inch 657 into the collection after the Rugers.

Most recently I bought two stainless Smith .41s, one with a seven inch barrel and one with a six inch. (No I don't want to be cured of my addiction.)

I was just depriming and belling a bunch of .41 Mag brass so I can load them up again to feed the tribe.

A few years ago I bought into the argument of why get a .41 Mag. when the .44 Mag is more commonly available and will do all of the same things and more. Then my LGS had a 6" 57 sitting around for a few months and I finally couldn't stand to be separated from all that beauty by that piece of glass anymore.

I am now completely indoctrinated and trying to find a Blackhawk in the caliber as well. Haven't shot any full strength loads in it (can't find any jacketed bullets). But having fun with the "Trooper" bullets from Missouri Bullet Co. Local BPS actually has brass, Unique, and 2400:D.

Yup the .41 magnum is a great cartridge as are the various guns chambered for it. I have my father's M58 that he used while he was a LEO. I take it easy on the old girl and feed her with my handloads which duplicate the old "Police Load". If I can convince the wife to let me spend the money I plan on buying a new 4" S&W M57. I'll have to save up for that purcahse though and hope that S&W don't discontinue production when I finally can afford one.

I bought my 57 for $175. Does that make me old?

Probably just smart. I believe my first was $300, so I'm just a tad dumber than you.

I have an order in with GA Arms for about a month now for ammo. They are out of components. Oh well.... I can wait as I have a fair amount of ammo.

i bought a new 6 inch mod 57 in the mid 80s, for the price of $350 it was a great shooter i latter traded it for a colt ar 15, and started my long love affair with the 44 magnum, the 41 is a great cal, but with all the 44 mag brass and 44 bullet molds i have stayed away from the 41. i almost traded for one a while back, and realy wish i had it was a 4 inch 57 smith. csa

I love em

Not sure why I like the 41 rem mag so much............I just enjoy shooting it more than about anything I have. I have a 657 Smith and a "Davidsons" Ruger 41 Super Blackhawk with the laminated grips & unfluted cylinder. Every time I go to the range one of them goes with me. I reload them and use the 210 JHP. Just my thoughts... but if you spend a day at the range with one and you will know what I mean. GG
