so, I have my eye on a Smith and Wesson model 49 in a pawn shop I know of. This is a “bodyguard” gun-J frame, snub-nose, 5-shot .38 with a shrouded hammer (SA/DA). This one is steel.

I’ve handled this one, and it appears to be in nice shape mechanically, and pretty reasonable cosmetically (for a carry piece).

Priced at $350, and I’m pretty sure I can knock $30 off that. Deal or no deal?

The T-Grips look great but I have Badger Custom grips on a few of my J frames and I like them a lot.

Eagle Boot Grips look great too but to me the Badger Grips feel better.

So... i went to the pawn shop. It had been several days since my last visit.

The gun was nicer than I remembered. But they had re-priced it. The gun is now at $400 and my ability to negotiate is no longer there.

I still want the gun but need to step back and come up with a better plan. I have a couple of decisions to make and some expenses to clear first. But the gun will be there a little longer, i think.

There is a nickel model 36 in a local pawn for $350. I am tempted but it would have been mine a month ago if it was a Bodyguard or a Centennial.

See if they'll meet you halfway at $375 and make the deal! At the very least check if they have layaway so you don't miss out on this gun.

I have a plan and will be headed back on Monday. I checked in today and it’s still there. All is not lost!!

I paid $350 from a friend for a no-dash nickel 49 a while back, it probably had 50 rounds through it total. He is an FBI agent and can't use it as an off duty/backup anymore so he sold it to me.

I, too woulda jumped on the 49 for $350 at first chance even though I have one already. Hopefully you can get them back down to $350-$375 and it'll be yours.

The only negatives I can say about my 49 is the front sight blade is paper-thin, and the glossy nickel finish makes using the sights indoors at the local range impossible. Other than that it's a nice pocket gun for sure!

Good luck, and stay safe!

Nice! $400.00 OTD isn’t bad at all, I think of it as 350 plus tax and dealer paperwork .

Let us know how it shoots for you.

Stay safe!
