smith model 64

So, I have been giving some thought to getting a used smith 64 that a local shot has. Actually he has several but that isnt really the point.. So, they are in great condition (police trade ins) with no markings of such and the finish is nothing short of immaculate.

I have not personally had the opportunity to shoot one, though I have shot a model 10 on occasion. (By all accounts, the same gun) They point perfectly and the actions and cylinder lock up could not be better....

Opinions on this gun? What would you estimate as the value given the above?

A local gun shop had a 3" pre-lock 64 in very good condition that recently sold. ASKING price was $299. I'm assuming it sold for that or a bit less.

It is the same as a Model 10, just blue vs. stainless.

However, there were different barrels on different variants.

I have an old standard barrel Model 10, which is the light, tapered barrel. The current versions have heavy barrels. They do feel different to point, but otherwise the same.

Neat little guns. Light and compact for a "full-size" revolver.

J&G has some police trade-ins, round butt, DAO modified, for $240.

I am a *huge* fan of the 64–what can I say; if you don't own a K-frame .38, you just don't get it.

I too follow the J&G site; they seem to keep a semi-steady stock of security/quasi LE trade-ins in rotation from 240-269 or so. Round butt versions are the more expensive.

That said, if the thing checked out according to Jim March's sticky, looked great, and locked up like a bank vault, I'd gladly pay way more than 269 to have one in hand from a local shop (no other fees), but maybe that's just me.

Really, if you are already tempted, I'd say go for it. A plus is that commercial ammo is some of the cheapest CF handgun fodder extant; you can get a 1000 rounds of Georgia Arm's version of the much loved "FBI" load for 220 or so.

And, as another high road poster once commented, the fixed sight K's shoot "like they were welded to one's eyeballs".

How old? Pre-1982 guns with pinned barrels bring a premium. Guns made before the MIM parts sell for more than the later ones. Barrel length? The shorter the barrel the higher the price. I can't even guess at a decent price without a lot more info.

This is one that would find favor with most S&W nuts. Pinned 2" barrel. A former Texas cop gun it shows a fair amount of honest wear and is department stamped. Paid $240 about 2 years ago.

I bought one like that last year from a C.A. pusher - $315 OTD. It was an unused security guard company trade-in. I plinked with it - sporting some Ahrends cocobolo square conversion grips from my 66 - for a year. I returned it to it's planned destiny - a house gun - with it's OEM UM's Combats. Here it is a couple of weeks ago:



Yeah, I still sneak it to the range. It is dead on windage-wise, elevation varies with load and distance. Mine was made ~3 yr ago - same SKU as current fare. Where in AL are you??

I would try to pay $300 for it. I think that is the benchmark for used 10s., M&Ps, and 64s. If you shop hard you can still find very, very clean examples for that price.

well... picked one up last week... 4 inch barrel, target wooden smith and wesson grips, newer model (not the pinned barrel). I am pretty pleased with it.. haven't had the chance to take her to the range yet, but I look forward to it.. I have shot them before and hold them in high regard for their overall pointability and accuracy for a fixed sight gun...

I have a M64 no dash that I paid $300 for a year ago. Points well, fun to shoot and easy to maintain.

Nice revolver, I'm sure you are going to really enjoy shooting it. There's nothing like a K frame IMO.

If you rub it down with some 0000 steel wool you can remove the scratches on it. Then polish it up with Flitz or Mothers Mag and you will really have something to take pictures of.

I definitely plan on giving it a bit of TLC...the imperfections are quite minor and would likely be easy to take out with nothing more than a soft buffing wheel... the only substantial blemish is a ding on the removable side plate.... but I can live with that...

I'm sure the flaws are minor, they look superficial. That's the joy of a Stainless finish, you can always buff it out...

so... I put a new Wolff Spring kit in my 64 this week and all I can say is WOW... the action was pretty nice and crisp before but now... it is pretty amazing. I couldnt be happier.

I absolutely love my 64 3". I actually bought it from a retiring cop.

It is the most accurate .38 I have ever shot.
