Smith revives the model 58

Don't I wish. :p

With the scalpers prices that 58's are starting to go for, maybe, just maybe the 58 will be produced again.

I am a dreamer, but it is a sweet dream I have.

Ahhhh, if you're going to dream you might as well dream BIG!

I still think the price for one of the real Model 58s out there, will be lower than what S&W would sell a new one for. It's just that no one in my neck of the woods seems to ever have any for sale.

I would like to see a S&W 658. Actually, in two versions. One should be a stainless steel duplicate of the old 58, and the new one should be a round butted 3" barrel version.

We will need a nice new load to go with these nice new wheelguns too.

The .41 magnum has definitely suffered mission creep over the years. There are plenty of good hunting loads available. We now need a mild recoil serious social round. It should also be cheap.

Life would be very dull without dreams.

Since Uberti did so well making Colt SAA clones maybe they would make some S&W copies?

I know the 58 is a great gun- and sometimes it seems that it is favored above a model 57. Now, I am certainly not knocking anyone's preferences- Lord knows I've got some strange ones myself...

I am just curious- if the price and condition was fairly equal- Would you prefer a 58 OVER a 57?

People who post such threads, should be slapped. I really would like some N frames like my K frame 13. I wish that S&W would start making more fixed sight N frames in various calibers, 45 Colt and acp would be great, and not that ugly pug nosed 45 acp snub that just came out, but a nice fixed sight N frame in 45 with a round butt and 3 or 4 inch barrel.

I would jump on the 58 and it become one of my rotation of carry guns.

I'd take the 58.
It was the ultimate police duty weapon and is just so darn cool. :D

Here's a little eye candy for the M58 fans.

Model 58

My department bought two model 58's that I was second in charge of testing and the chief decided to let individual officers choose their own weapons. Some officers went with 9mm's, some kept their 38's and others went with 45's. I was the only one that wanted the 58's so I have one new and one used. A partner died because of his 9mm being ineffective on a burglar.

My pistols are sort of special because I tested one even though it was not adopted and was able to buy both of them. The gunfighter grip is mine of cherry wood and the bullet mold I use I made also at Saeco. They have storage oil on them now.

I could have followed fresh bear tracks in the snow, one pulling a piece of rope and have met bears several times carrying one of my 58's on my ranch and we left each other alone. I really don't understand someone expecting a bear to attack them in the lower 48 when it is well known what can provoke them. On another site a fellow wanted advice on hot loads for his .357 pistol for when he expects a bear to attack him. Wow

I couldn't buy my Dept issued 58. :( I sure would have liked to.

As I told you a few months ago Fitz, if you ever want to sell either or both of those I'll give them a good lifelong home.

Hmmm... I've got both a blued and nickeled M58 that are NIB and I got good deals on before they became popular to the general populace. I bought my shooter for $325 at a show about 15 years ago. They are still much more scarce than the M57, so I'd have to go with the M58.

A S&W rep I know is still dropping hints of a S&W M57 "Blued" Mountain Gun just to keep my blood pressure up, the cad!:scrutiny:
