Smith & Wesson Secures Contracts for M&P Pistols

September 06, 2006 12:00:55 (ET)

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept 06, 2006 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation (SWHC, Trade), parent company of Smith & Wesson Corp., the legendary 154-year old firearms maker, announced today that it has secured contracts to supply the Columbus, Ohio Police Department and the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Police (DFW) with the company's advanced-design polymer pistol, the M&P40. The agreements call for 1,875 M&P40 pistols to be shipped to the Columbus Police Department and 305 M&P40 pistols to be shipped for use by DFW Airport police officers.

After an extensive evaluation process, both departments indicated that the M&P40 incorporates key features that provide accuracy, durability and flexibility for use in duty. During performance testing completed by the Columbus Police Department, over 60,000 rounds were fired through six M&P40 pistols, with no malfunctions recorded. In conjunction with the testing, an additional rapid-fire test was conducted and 2,500 rounds were fired through one pistol in 40 minutes. Officials at both the Columbus Police Department and the DFW Airport Police indicated that the M&P40 performed flawlessly through each test.

Sergeant Dana Winship, Columbus Division of Police, said, "Trying to find a pistol to match the range of hand sizes of the 1,800 officers at the Columbus Police Department, along with insuring accuracy, durability, and the stopping power needed for police work, was a daunting effort. After an extensive evaluation of the various makes of pistols available, the M&P40 proved to be superior in all aspects. Smith and Wesson developed the M&P pistol with the police officer in mind. The M&P40 is an ergonomic, lightweight yet controllable pistol with ambidextrous capabilities, excellent accuracy and a crisp, smooth trigger pull. The officers on the street deserve the best equipment available. Smith & Wesson stepped up and delivered that with the M&P."

Tom Taylor, Smith & Wesson's Vice President of Marketing, said, "Since the M&P Pistol Series was first introduced in November 2005, it has quickly changed performance expectations in the duty firearm test and evaluation process. We are proud to support the men and women of the Columbus Police Department and the Dallas Fort Worth Airport Police, and are pleased to add them to the growing number of law enforcement agencies that have selected M&P pistols."

Thought I'd throw this out there to put a preemptive kabosh on the "I heard ABC gun co. got a contract with agency x for 100, 000 units." Good for S&W. Any THR shooters with a range report on this pistol?

His was almost certainly a lemon. I think S&W should have fixed it so it ran, or sent him a new gun. In S&W's defense, Ermac did say that the dealer offered to ship it back until it was fixed, but I can hardly blame him for trading it for a CZ75.

We beat the crap out of our T&E guns, and they ran like tops. Of course, they were M&P40s, not 9s. I have fired the gun and I like it a lot. I do not yet have mine issued, but the ones I've seen/shot run great. They had an issue with light primer strikes at first (note how that got left out of the article? ), but once that was solved they ran fine. The trigger is great, for a duty gun.

I've been interested in the M&P for quite a while but keep hearing mixed reviews. There was a guy using one at the local Monday night league a while back and he had nothing but problems. On the other hand I shot an IDPA match last Saturday and there was a guy on my squad that shot two guns and they were both M&P's. One was a 9mm and the other was a 40. His guns ran good and he swears by them.
Also what is the deal with the magazine disconnect? I have heard it is only available with the disconnect (I asked a S&W rep at the Shot Show), and some people say it is available without the disconnect but I have personally never seen one without.

I've shot several M&Ps in 40 & 9, and have been very impressed. I've been saying for some time that I think it's the best polymer pistol out there, and I think I've shot them all, except for the Steyr.

Gary, from what I understand, S&W does make an M&P without the mag disconnect, but it is only for LEO/military contracts. There are some people who have removed that mag safety, I don't have a link to the appropriate forum right now, but it was not a hard retrofit.

my model did not have the disconnect - you can order it...its available to anyone despite people saying its only for LEO....anyone can get it...if a store does not have it in, you can order it...I did.

I bought one in 9mm and love it.

mine needs a tad of fluff and buff on the feed ramp to run with my preferred hollowpoints (124grain JHP'd Federal Hydrashoks) but it works flawlessly with corbons and other FMJ's. With the hydrashoks, when I manually feed the first round, I feel a bit of a hangup, but have not gotten any FTF's at all. I'm just a perfectionist.

The trigger is probably the best striker-fired trigger i've ever shot. It needs a little lightening, at 7lbs out of the box, but it's got a great travel and break.

Also, I got one without an integrated lock and without a mag disconnect down from Bachmann's pawn and gun in Downtown Dallas. They had 'em in stock.

I saw an M&P .40 in a local shop today, no mag safety, so they are out there for purchase. $444.

The customer reviews that I have read and heard have been very positive. I think they have a winner here and hope they have much success with it.

I've been contemplating a re-visit of the 40 cal & the M&P is one of the prospects I'm looking at. From all accounts, it's a nice pistol & it has some desceptively good ergos.

Gary, the M&P you saw having problems...was it a 9mm or a .40 S&W?

Mike

Anyone got an update? Any dirt on whether it will replace the M9? Any upcoming police departments that might switch?

I was highly skeptical at first also, but the M&P 9 that I shot was very nice. Very little recoil, with ergonomic controls and grips. Gun ran smoothly, and was pretty accurate.

Only gripe was the trigger was pretty stiff. But the gun I shot was in its first 100 rds. No breakin required. Gun shot reliably for its first 100.
