snap strap or hammer thong on holster ,which is best?

got ruger .44 mag super blackhawk 4 3/4 inch barrel, want to order elpaso tom three persons holster, has option of hammer thong or snap strap, which is better? and the advantage or disadvantige of both. have used holsters with snap strap before but not hammer thong

It really is a matter of preference but with a properly fitting holster I would give the nod to hammer thong as it is less likely to accidently become undone.

Snap safety straps can help secure a gun in poorly fitted holsters. They can be easily unsnapped if they catch on something such as brush in the field.

But with a properly fitted high quality holster a hammer thong or safety strap isn't needed.

BSA1 is right a properly fitted holster is more important than a thong or a strap. If I were to use either it would be a thong.

I got my Colt SAA El Paso with a strap, and have no regrets.



The El Paso holsters are so well fitted there is no chance of a gun falling out.
Or accidentally getting cocked in the holster.

And it is not going to get unsnapped unless you want it unsnapped.
At least none of mine ever have.
It is pretty well shielded behind the curve of the holster from snags.

The snap strap is plenty long enough to tuck behind the belt out of the way if not needed.

I have had hammer thongs catch on a gun muzzle in the past during the draw.

I've carried a revolver of one kind or another a lot of miles in the past. Now I'm not going to walk that far. Jokes aside I've used both and decided I prefer the strap. My walking country consisted, and still does what little walking I do, of mesquite bushes and shinnery oak. I have never had a problem with either coming loose but just prefer the strap.

I've been making my own holsters for years and rig 'em the way I want.

I've had thongs snatch a pulled gun from my hand so I prefer snaps.
