If I adopt a sniper, will they come to my home and do my bidding?

Snipers are just very highly trained infantry riflemen. As much as I like the idea of giving support to them, this site is a BS site. Military snipers do not need aftermarket kit. They're pros and they make whatever they don't get issued.
"...We have the actual addresses for the snipers themselves and are in direct contact with them..." This is BS of the highest order.
If you want to send a 'care package' to a troopie, talk to your local regular Army/Marine etc., unit. They'll tell you exactly how to do it and what is allowed and what is not. IE: no booze is one thing.
Looked into it for the CF. They were very impressed that some fat old guy would even ask.

I figured it was a scam. I don't know jack about sniping, but I was in the air wing, and I don't recall anyone ever asking for care packages of helicopter parts.

You wouldn't believe how under equipped the Marine Snipers are. One of my friends who has his own military supply business was approached by a XO of a group of snipers heading to the sand box back in June. He was given a Government issued Credit card and told to out fit them with everything they needed to do the job right. This XO also set these guys up with the best veteran shooting and sniper instructors he could find and sent them to a private shooting school for a week. He also rounded up several Marines that were in Iraq on day one and had just gotten back to relay to these guys what they needed to know to survive and not get shot or blown up. My buddy said when he got to the school and saw what these guys had been issued for equipment it was absolutly pathetic. Also when these guys got to school my buddy had a few retired Armors go over their rifles to make sure they were in top condition. For you guys that think the Government got rolled, all the equipment was sold at cost with zero profit. The instructors and armorers donated their time and the school waved all cost associated with the additional training of these Marine Snipers. The Army guys get the best of everything and the Marines have to make do with what ever they get to use. I guess that is why the Marines are held in such high regard.

This site is supposedly legit.

It originated through http://www.snipersonline.org who started the program and then created the adoptasniper.org site.

There's a thread on The Sniper's Hide (http://www.snipershide.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=000524;p=1), and apparently, Keith Deneys, the guy who runs Snipers Online and the Adopt A Sniper program, is known by people in the sniper community (real military and LEO snipers, not wannabes).

So take it as you will. If you don't trust them, but you want to help out, you can always find out about someone in your own neighborhood/community that got deployed and you can send them stuff yourself.

Adopt a sniper:
"Honey, this sniper followed me home. He doesn't have any dog-tags...can I keep him?

From what I hear, in most of the branches of the military the sniper is still considered the red-headed step child of the forces. They're concerned with the full battallion assaults, or the special squad teams. The 1 or 2 man teams don't seem to rate the recognition. I hope that it's not true.

If the site is legit, then the milirary has some 'splaining to do about why it might be necessary.
Here is the 'splaining....

NO military in history has ever been able to completely outfit the troops with everything they need. It is impossible. The cost and bureaucracy coupled with the chaos of war guarantees that at least some, if not many, troops will not be properly equipped.

Even if every piece of equipment that is needed could be purchased, it then takes a perfect logistical system to get the equipment to those that need it. Since human beings are in charge of the logistics, this guarantees that it won't be perfect.

Throughout history, the US military has excelled in logistics far beyond any other country's military, especially comparable large ones. In spite of this, there will always be cases where a soldier does not get three MRE's every day, there will always be the possiblity that some troops will die because someone did not get body armor or ammo to them in time.

We can't solve the problem of feeding the hungry within the this country, how can we expect the military to have a perfect track record when it comes to equipping the troops in a war zone?

I was a Marine under Reagan's watch and the difference in being equipped under him vs. Carter was night & day. But even then, I never deployed with everything I needed. A number of times I ended up in "iffy" situations without an issued bayonet or k-bar, a very basic item.

The "adopt a sniper" and "adopt a platoon" programs are great ways for us who care can directly help, but they should not be taken (soley) as indicators that our military leaders are not getting the job done when it comes to equipping the troops.

Read this thread on the general discussions. You will get a insight on equipment needed

This group has shipped alot of needed items to snipers currently deployed to the sandbox and have helped out alot. It is legit and welcome by the Marine Snipers deployed although not fully supported by the Army. They have supplied equiptment that has been requested by units they have been in contact with that is not supplied by their respective units or is different than what the government thought the personnel would need for a cold war environment. I have supported this group and will continue to do so.

My #3 son has been a sniper in the USMC for 8 yrs. before he transferred to Recon.

He has done 3 tours in Iraq, just got back last Thursday from his last one.

The USMC provides them with everything they need, if they did'nt this dad would.:)
