So at the range today.....

by the second hit the RM is on him reaming him like a D.I. in boot, takes his weapon, unloads it has him pack up to leave, banned for life, he was arguing he has a membership and will not be treated like this, RM tells him wrong, you HAD a membership.

Oh, yeah, if only this happened more often. I live in a state that required you take (and pass) a 30-question test before you can buy a firearm. What is NOT required is any demonstration that the buyer knows how to use the gun safely; this is somehow left to serendipity. I'm waiting for some fool the get banned at our local range for putting himself and those around him in danger. Oft times it's just ignorance at work, but I keep an eye on everyone near me, and more than once I've stepped back from the FL to live another day.

What rifle has a slide? I have never seen one, I have seen a bolt, forestock, lever and a charging handle, plus the butt and stock would get in the way of the slide to hammer the slide shut on the floor.
Reno
The thing you grasp and pull on an M1 carbine is usually referred to as a slide to differentiate it from the operating rod of an M1 rifle as it does not also contain the piston, but does more than just a charging handle.

My son is 43 and a LEO for 20 plus years. He has always referred to a magazine as a "clip". My attempts to correct him over the years have always been met with a shoulder shrug. Sometimes I think he does it just to aggravate me.
I recently commented to a local Deputy that I liked the S&W M&P she was carrying. She replied, " Thanks, hey maybe you can tell me, what does it stand for?" I replied, "Uhhhh....Military and Police."
I kid you not.

Yet another reason why I avoid public ranges like the plague. I shoot at the PD range, or at the non-public practical ranges at matches. No way I am going to be around the dirt shooters and Bubba Gumps with guns.

Pass...pass...passa-freakin-deena.

Most cops are not gun people....it is just a tool and a tool they likely only ever touch to qualify. They will use the flash light more.

This is why i joined a local gun club. members only and they ask in the application how many years have you owned guns, hunted, etc. where you work, schooling, etc. they screen people pretty well and if a member doesn't agree with something on the application. I'm usually the only one there and that's just how i like it unless i know the person i just go home or to lunch and then come back hoping they are gone. public ranges scare the hell out of me.

I visited a state run public rifle and pistol range about 1.5hrs away cause that was my only option before the club had an opening. we arrived and i was trying to sight in a 22lr at 50yards and 2 guys maybe 20yo at the oldest show up in a benz and drag several pistols, ar-15 and ak's out and begin doing mag dumps. i stopped shooting and just stood there and stepped back and watched them for a few as did several other people. one guy was trying to teach his kids to shoot 22lr and it freaked the kids out. well silver spoon boy decides to start talking crap to his buddy about us not being able to afford Daniel defense with silencers or sig saurs and would do another mag dump. I explained to them the range rules are no rapid fire for ricochet and safety. i think it kind of scared him a little so he quit. i began shooting the 22 and all of a sudden 30rds down range in 5 seconds. I got pissed and told my buddy i was tired of it and going to say something to the range officer that sits 200yards away form the range in a air conditioned shack who could probably care less what happens. well the older gentlemen took over and walked over and told them to quit. they did it again so i flipped. I said is that **** necessary man! there are kids and stuff around, he says oh if its like that ill just put my silencer i paid $1k for on and continued to mag dump and then i heard it. zing! i packed up my stuff and the RO asked where i was going and i said home! 1.5hrs home and wont be back! the RO drove over on his cart and threw them out and asked my and my buddy not to leave as we go there several times a year and he knows us. I said no thanks my trucks packed and I'm out of here before i get into trouble.

I went to a new indoor range after work with a buddy several years ago and there was one counter guy who disappeared and a younger guy comes out with a 1911 in the lobby and says hey anyone work here? my gun jammed. after telling him take the gun back inside the stalls and explaining a double feed the counter guy comes out and brings the gun out into the lobby and takes a small screw driver and tries to pry the magazine out of the gun. i looked at my buddy and said im out of here and we never went back. a guy at work took his CHL class at this same shop and they told him he didn't have to obey no gun signs in stores cause its concealed and they shouldn't even know he has it on him to be able to throw him out.

Yep, I have a number of friends that I have shot competitively with over the years that are LEO, three of them are instructors for their departments. Lots of story's about firearm condition (some even not capable of being fired) and lack of ability to qualify and such.

Even at the state run ranges here they have to follow the law....so it would not work here in Missouri....21 to own a handgun....there are some exceptions but in a nut shell that is it.

Also our guy walks around while shooting, goes into booths between shoots, and I have seen them toss people out for leaving loaded weapons on their bench while people are down range changing targets.

But I do agree I have seen some scary stuff...hard for one guy to watch all those lanes and the shotgun house as well. Glad I live in the boonies now and can shoot off my back porch.

I don't even like going to the club range as I am at the will...well not really will, but others are there....If I want to shoot 5 then walk down there to look up close I can at home....at the club if others are there I will wait for them to finish....I really only go to the club if I want to shoot longer then the 100 yards I can do at home.

Sorry, but IMHO, Herrwalther was wrong to use force and threats toward the range master, especially when holding a firearm with that implied threat. One RM I know is about 6' 7" and weighs 320, almost all muscle; I suspect he would have put anyone who uttered such a threat on HIS a** and then physically thrown him off the range. Yes, there are times when it may be necessary to make a gun safe and sometimes that may appear to be dangerous, but if so, calling for a cease fire and a clear range is the proper response, not fumbling with a loaded gun and threatening a range officer.

Jim
Wrong. The RO should have never put his hands on him, period. Once he did that, he gave up his right to be put off by anything said.

Range time for me has never been a social outing. I am disappointed if I don't get the small club range where I shoot all to myself. Adding armed people to the equation makes me uncomfortable. Yes, by and large, most shooters are potty trained, but it only takes one.

What state? This is true in Virginia. No gun signs in a business are not legally binding, but if spotted and asked to leave, trespassing laws do apply if you refuse.

Ohio

The way i read it in the state handbook issued by the attorney general is you have to obey them as long as its setup per Ohio law. our signs even say that carrying a weapon on the premises is against the law unless authorized by Ohio law and then lists the code number.

I just skimmed through the attorney generals page with the ccw laws and it says the sign must be visible and says it prohibits deadly weapons or firearms on that private property. even if its not an exact law ohio says you may post those signs so IMO its a bad practice for an instructor to say ignore the signs.

Don't know about Ohio, but here in MO, that no gun sign is not the law....I was not aware that they "have to obey" them. Your private property does not trump state or federal laws.
