Have you guys heard back from any college adminstrators or faculty?

Basically, I've been, in several threads, suggesting that people contact school presidents, deans, faculty, etc., and ask "So, how are you going to make sure that my son/daughter/spouse/myself is safe on campus?"

I'm hoping that some students can start to follow up starting around Wednesday, pamphletting/postering campus area bulletin boards with some of Oleg's materials.

Then, starting Friday, ramp up the calls/e-mails a bit, and start asking "Why can't Bobby/Becky legally carry a gun for protection?" Then, depending on the answer you get, suggest that they contact the state government (which is better than ordinary Joe Citizen doing that...), or change their policy...

It's just a little thing, but it's about self defense, freedom, and all that other fun stuff.

Or should I just shut up?

Unfortunately I had to vote that I'm not doing anything.

Campus carry in Texas is outlawed so it's not the fault or responsibility of the School Administration unfortunately.

Now, as far as changing that I'm doing what I can but there doesn't seem to be a lot of movement in that direction.

Are we only getting 4% of our population here doing anything?

I doubt most people know what the hell you're talking about unless they read the other thread, and they probably think you're just loony
(just kidding)
Might wanna post a link to the other discussion or something ......

Ah, but if the school administration decides that it shouldn't be against the law, they'll bother your legislators... That's precisely the sort of situation we need to have happen. If President Smith of Texas College calls Governor Jones, and says "Hey, we've got folks asking about this, and it's starting to sound like a good idea," things are likely to at least be considered...

Just because something is against a law, or a policy, is not a reason to avoid changing it if it is a bad law or policy.

Believe it or not that's happened here. There was a petition a while back from several schools about this.

In Texas our legislature only meets every other year. I mean, you wouldn't want to actually have any CHANGE would you?

So, we are in the off year now, the Texas Legislature will not convene again until Jan 09. There's a long list of changes we hope to get next session. We've done pretty well the last 3 or 4, just have to wait a long time between them.

I contacted my alma mater. I noticed a problem. Schools that have never had a shooting incident think that for whatever reason (their school’s culture, their student demographic, the caliber of their students, etc.) such shootings won't happen on their turf. In the administrators' minds, the proposed solution is like asking to fix something that ain't broke, or it's a low priority given all the other crap on their plates.

Further, my undergrad alma mater is in LA County where a CCW license is basically impossible anyway. Also, my law school alma mater is in a similar locale (D.C.).

I'll direct any future efforts to different schools and locations.

Someone might want to post a link to whatever this poll is referring to. I assume it has something to do with some recent shootings, but I don't read every thread every day, so chalk me up as another non-voting viewer until I know what this is all about.

bogie, you should edit your original post to include this last post. It's doubtful that most people will read all the way down to Post #11 before they click out. Or maybe start a new thread altogether.

That pretty well sums up what I got from the Dean of Students. The bean counters have forced them to cross their fingers and just hope/pray it doesnt happen on their campus. Why, fixing the problem costs $$$ and they like driving Jags and Caddies. They dont wanna give up one cent more than is recquired for services, or in their minds back to the students for protection.

So, doc, you gonna put a few of Oleg's posters up on Wednesday or so?

Anyway?

Keep at 'em. Sooner or later they'll figure out that it's cheaper to allow students/faculty to carry concealed than it is to deal with lawsuits after someone goes nutjob.

Here In Florida it's state law not to carry on campus. I've been pushing Students for Concealed Carry more than ever at my wife's university and some other schools in FL thru friends. They even made it on CNN the other night. Link to them is now in my sig at this and some other forums I frequent. I am volunteering holsters for the upcoming empty holster protest in April. for those that don't have their own.

Good deal! It _is_ possible to change laws, and, more important, "engraved in stone policies!"

Guys, keep in mind that all this week, folks in various universities/legislatures have probably been tasked with "Find a solution to this problem in time for the Friday meeting." That means that if we get lucky, and get 'hold of the poor SOB who the task rolled down to, we have a DARN GOOD CHANCE of having our message heard.

Which means, even if you don't think it'll do any good, go ahead and give 'em a call or drop a short e-mail. I'll bet at least some of you will spend more time bitching about the next ammo price increase at wal-mart - take a few minutes, and do something that is productive...

In Michigan, campus carry is legal, but classrooms and dorms are fish-in-a-barrel zones. There is no point in contacting administrators. I have e-mailed all state legislators and gotten some positive feedback.

No, there IS a point in contacting adminstrators, faculty, deans, presidents, etc.

They are going to be thinking about this this week. Let's give them MORE to think about. Get a few of them _converted_ and then the legislators _will_ listen to them... Think about it. Who gets listened to more about the subject of college security? Joe Blow, or the president of a university? We need to convert some of them. We can do it. We have THOUSANDS of people, spread across the country. And they have friends they can ask to also make calls and write e-mails. And they have friends... we can grow this into a SERIOUS movement. Or...

Or are you going to give up?

Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? No!

I went to a campus safety meeting at my college, a couple of weeks ago. They brought up shooter situations mainly Virginia Tech., and I brought up the fact that legal permit holders were unable to carry on campus and that we can't rely on campus security to defend us all the time. The only answer would be to allow concealed carry. To ban it is just stupid. As I was saying this, multiple people were nodding their heads in agreement, including the campus security guards present (who are also unarmed btw).

The next person to speak seconded what I said, and others were agreeing. A person that was on the safety committee made a crappy comment about how unlikely a shooter situation was, and that it was a bad idea to arm the students. I was unable to respond to this during the forum, but I tried really hard.

After the forum, several people approached me, and I had some good conversation with others who felt the same way. It was actually inspiring to see others believe in ccw. Most people I encounter at my school are anti-gun, but I always challenge them on it, and have converted a few.

Anyways, I sent a follow up letter to the committee and explained more in depth about gun free zones, and I responded to the committee member's comment. I explained it pretty well I think, and I think this committee is presenting a report of some kind to the entire Oregon University system, as well as the governor.

Also, I agree with Bogie, we can do alot with our numbers. Look at the Ron Paul grassroots. They were CRAZY! I don't think even they had our numbers, and not only were they able to raise craploads of money, but they had a presence everywhere. We do too.

We need to make ourselves more visible. They will never hear us if we don't speak loudly.

Although....
Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? No!
wasn't that the Japanese???

I am lucky my dean of students is a Vet like myself, he is a former Navy Lt. (Go Navy) from the signal corps.
Unfortunately all posters have to have permission to be posted, so I am going to try and get one of each of Olegs posters approved by each department for each building.

Of course, if you guerilla post them, they'll come down. Eventually. Which may last longer than having them not get approved...

Not suggesting that anyone break any POLICIES here, you know...

What Would Bluto Do?

In the administrators' minds, the proposed solution is like asking to fix something that ain't broke, or it's a low priority given all the other crap on their plates.

Nothing wrong with having a wrench around in case something does break though.
