So I shot a gun today... for the first time.

After about three hours of gun safety, gun anatomy, common firing line commands, etc, they finally let me pop off a few. Two groups of 5 rounds at 50 feet.

First group was all over the place, but still on paper. Second group was at least all in the two inch target. I scored a 37/50 on the second, highest in the safety class by a margin of around 10.

Random Thoughts:

Even though it was a .22, I found the recoil and noise tame. My friend's bb gun recoils as much.

The sound of a bolt action/case extraction is probably the coolest sound, ever... Ka-chlick chlunk-click... plink plink plink.

I want to shoot more. Lots more.

Why is there no smoking in the range?

I felt weird all day cause I didn't drink my daily coffee allowance to keep from trembling. Apparently it worked, but I was a little off all day.

Shooting makes me hungry.

Cleaning guns isn't half bad.

Semi automatic! Now!

When can I shoot a hangun/shotgun/full auto/centerfire anything?

Anyway...

Thanks alot for all your help along with the whole RKBA thing. Especially you Oleg! This is the end of the beginning! I have a whole grand life of putting holes in paper and converting anti's in front of me!

Glad to hear you had a fun and safe time. Hope this means we'll see you at a future THR bay area shoot. There will be plenty of opportunities to fire some centerfire autochuckers there. :D
 
One reason for not smoking:

This is going to sound really weird, but a lot of the powder in the rounds that get fired does NOT burn. It gets sprayed out so fast that if it hasn't burned by the time it clears the muzzle, it'll stop burning...and forms flammable dust all over the floor. Which when swept into piles and then somebody tosses hot ash onto, can be quite spectacular :).

Usually harmless on a concrete floor though.
 
They started you out at 50 feet?:eek:

I'm still new to this whole shooting thing myself and can barely stay on paper at that distance. Good for you, though.

The only time I ever smoke anymore is when I'm at an outdoor range- I like to light one up when everyone else walking down range to check their targets. You should be very careful if you smoke or eat after shooting- your hands can be contaminated with small amounts of lead that you could accidentally injest- carry som Wetnap wipes with you to clean your hands before eating or smoking if there are no facilities to wash your hands.

I find cleaning guns to be stress relieving- 3 favorite smells: Hoppes #9, Birchwood Casey Sheath, and Chanel #5.

Find someone in your area with a Garand to lend you for a clip or two and you'll shine like a newly minted quarter.

Hope you try some trap/sket/sporting clays also. Breaking clay targets with a shotgun is mucho fun.
 
Congrats, winston! Sounds like a great way to have been introduced to shooting sports... my first time, a friend just handed me a 7mm 08 and pretty much said "good luck" :p Anyways, your only chance of full-auto fire anytime soon (without becoming somebody's "wife") is to go to another state, or to find somebody in CA that owns a gattling gun. Anyways, i'm glad you enjoyed it!
 
In addition to the fire hazard, there is no smoking or usually eating or drinking allowed in an indoor range due to the lead in the air, on surfaces near the firing line and on the shooter's hands. You should always wash your hands and face after you shoot before you smoke or eat anything.
 
Sounds like you had fun, which is all that matters. You are starting out a little behind, but I am sure you will catch up fast. Good Luck

Congrats and glad you had fun. I hope you have many more pleasurable shooting experiences, but a coffee addiction at only 16 years of age? Becareful as the addiction gets worst then not feeding it will be as bad as feeding the addiction. You may not have the trembles, but your concentration could suffer as your temperment becomes short.
 
congrats on your first time out I think shooting is probably hands down the second most fun thing you can do legally.

With the no smoking you gotta think about how every time you shoot particularly a long day at the range especially an indoor range you're gunna have lead and other nasties from the powder all over your hands and in your lungs anyway then you'll be touching the cigarette or whatever with your fingers then inhailing it, you're all ready gettin enough garbage in your lungs from the gun :D. A doctor/hunter friend of mine also said something about the lead or smoking or something opening up the bronchial tubes in your long so smoking with all the lead in the air is suposedly pretty bad. ....ofcourse so is drinking, cleaning, hamburgers, chilidogs, and I think sleeping is probably bad for you on some level :rolleyes:

Congratulations on a succesful first trip to the range! I recently took my 14 year old nephew for his first trip. The excitement and nervousness I saw in his eyes was probably the same that were in yours and the same that were in mine on my first trip. Keep going and you will build a lifetime of wonderful memories and a whole bunch of new friends in the process!

Well .. I guess she is so used to seeing something different it is hard for her to know how to react! One time it's the smallest 9mm .. R9S ... and then a crew-served cannon like the BFR.

Somehow - I have a feeling, this'll be one of those guns she will NOT want to try out. She has tho tried most, bless her.
