so what other things besides beeswax what can i use to make lube

I noticed beeswax is expensive so is there other alternative's to making lube for patching roundballs and using it for lubricating our muzzleloaders? thanks guys!
 
Not saying I'd use this, but I did wax one of my canvas jackets with melted toilet seal wax- I could get it at home depot for $1.50 a ring. I don't know what kind of wax it was though. Again, this was just for proofing a jacket.

I'd be interested in what folks in the know have to say on this.
 
Craft stores sell a "soy wax" that is a decent replacement for bee's wax.
A good lube can be made of 1 part soy wax, 1 part crisco and 1/2 part cooking paraffin.
 
Go to Walmart's website. Search for Burt's Bees. It's 100% bees wax in the hair care section. It's used on dreadlocks. You probably don't wear dreadlocks, which is why you don't know about this.:rolleyes:

I mix mine with Crisco. 50/50 over gentle heat until it's mixed well. Refrigerate overnight to solidify. Makes enough to last a very long time.
 
I've used 50/50 beeswax/olive oil and BW/lard and BW/deer tallow. For wad lube the BW/lard or olive oil is fine. I use the BW/tallow on my loaded cartridges as a bullet lube for BP & smokeless.
 
I just melted a few ordinary plain white candles and lard together to get my current batch of lube and it works just fine. Pretty stiff since I went with 50/50 proportions but keeps the fouling soft and everything operating smoothly.
 
sharps59 I am making powder as I feel its expensive at $25lb so the costs of makin it is much much lower, so I am wanting to do like our ancestors did, make our own, plus bein frugal!
 
This will probably get me ostracized here but I prefer to use plain old Bore Butter. For the price and quality (in my opinion) it is not worth messing with mixing your own. Prior to that I used Mink Oil from TOW but it is more expensive.

I used to pan lube my BP bullets with a mixture of about 50/50 Beeswax/Crisco. Worked fine. Mixing the beeswax with the Crisco cut down the final cost too. I used to mix it in a double boiler so it wouldn't catch fire.

Which Crisco are we talking about, liquid or solid.

I use the solid, a 50/50 mix for wads, but find I have to add a percentage of olive oil to get the mixture to adhere to bullet groves.

Should I be using the liquid. I know they are both vegetable oil base but the solid has been altered to stay solid at room temp , or the liquid has been, which ever.
