I got sent a picture of some oddball ammo I have never seen before. He says it's very heavy, heavier than normal slugs. Short of asking him to cut them open, what are these?

Not sure but the first thing that I thought of was that it was some kind of rubber slug or buckshot; maybe used for riot control.

That was his thought also, but I have some of those from several generations, and they look like any other shotgun ammo.
I've emailed him and asked him to cut one open.

Tell him to put a magnet to them and see.
Could they be impact marking rounds of some sort? Or a type of flare/tracer/incendiary chemical-reaction round?

Scooter could be onto something, could be a 12 gauge version to bust up kiln buildup. I have some of the 8 gauge shells made by remington to be used in their master blaster. It is a 3 oz cylindrical slug.

That isn't a kiln load. Certainly not in 20 gauge. We had 4 gauge and 8 gauge versions of the Remington cannons, and I once used my Wingmaster Magnum to try breaking up some clumped coal in a bunker as well. Looks like some type of single projectile lead slug.

Well, now we wait. I am overseas at the moment and can't get my mitts on them, but I have asked my friend to carve one open for us and take some pics.

The French had a series of slugs that were shaped like blimps. ball round front ends tapered back to four little tail fins. Some were for punching through things and some were chemical carriers and some were rubber bullets. They were rather long for caliber, thus the fins.

I am betting on one form of those or another.

Optimus, I appreciate it, but based on their weight (2-3x a normal slug round) I assume they are just a massive hunk of lead in there.
