Does anyone have any first hand experience with mounting an Eotech on a Socom 16? I have read in other forums about heat transfer affecting the functioning of the Eotech. From what I have read it always seems that somebody knows someone or somebodies cousin has a friend who ruined his Eotech after shooting a 100 rounds on a hot summer day. I would appreciate any first hand accounts, Thanks.

I dont have experience with the Eotech, but I did have an Aimpoint on my SOCOM, and it didnt suffer any ill effects from the heat. I shot it fast enough and long enough on a number of occasions that you couldnt touch the barrel or mount too.

Springfields rail is lacking though, and if I were to go that route again, I'd go with the Ultimak rail in its place. The Springfield rail is made of steel and does get very hot, and stays hot a lot longer, as the steel retains the heat where the aluminum of the Ultimak does not.

Another issue wit the Springfield rail (or at least with mine) was that its not "mil spec", and you may have difficulties with mounts that are. My La Rue mount would not go on at all, and I tried three ARMS mounts before I got one to stay snug. It never would get "tight", and I gave up at that point. Weaver type mounts work fine.

I have a Bushnell Holosight on mine and I havent had any problems. Ive never fired the rifle enough to get it really hot though.

Ammo is too expensive :(

An Aimpoint would be a better choice because of the heat issues. Plus the loooooooong battery life is a great feature. Turn it on and leave it on.

I don't recall that it actually ruins the Eotech, but the high heat does cause it to overheat and become unusable.

Thanks for the responses. I plan on testing this theory soon on my own socom but I was hoping that the overheating stories were myth. I have been considering removing the scout mount and adding a traditional scope mount and a putting the eotech or other optic there. Good mounts seem to be in the $280 to $400 price range so that is an expensive choice.

I shot about 120 rounds a couple of weekends ago in 50 degree weather over about 2 hours and the barrel heated up pretty good even when shooting slow and steady.

Thanks again
