SOG Fixed Blade

Dear All,

I needed a concealable fixed blade knife for self protection and to use as a general purpose cutting tool. Someone suggested that I buy a Cold Steel Kobun and off I went to the retailer. Alas they only had the Kobun in a serrated edge :banghead: and I want to keep such edges to a minimum. The shop clerk said that new shipments would also be due to several weeks time so I asked him for another 5" fixed blade knife which came in a kydex sheath.

He suggested the SOG X-42 Recondo with BG42 steel as his best compromise. (I hate not getting the EXACT knife that I want .) I bought it for the local equivalent for US$91 and he threw in a discounted Gerber serrated sharpening tool as well.

I can just about conceal that knife under a loose fitting shirt and it cuts pretty well in my opinion but I have two questions for more knowledgeable THRers:

1) Did I make too much of a compromise in purchasing this knife over a Cold Steel Serrated Kobun?
2) Did I get ripped off for the price I paid?

Check recent postings under 'best steels for hunting knives'. The BG 42 is the best stainless steel for knives. The X-42 is no compromise at all. And the price is good. Enjoy it !!

No, it sounds like you paid a fair price.

For example, www.1sks.com has the same knife listed "on sale" for $95.99 ..

I think you will find your SOG to be a quality knife and I think you will be pleased.

You got a much better knife at a good price. I'd say the knife gods were looking out for you that day.

As to using a knife for protection that you use for utility also, don't! If you think you may need a knife for protection it needs to be so sharp that it pops hairs without touching the skin. A knife used for day to day tasks will not be that sharp unless you are dedicated to sharpening your knife frequently. Buy a simple Opinel for $10 and use it for your utility and keep your SOG for protection.

After my last purchase,

the retailer called me again offering to sell me a S37 SEAL KNIFE 2000 for the equivalent of US$103. Does anyone own this knife or have good things to say about it? Is the price reasonable?

I'm asking b'cos i just bought a recondo x-42 and my bank account is feeling the pinch. Things would be easier on my cash flow if i don't get the SEAL 2000 but I'm concerned that such a deal may never come again. The local active duty military is making contract purchases of all the good fighting knives in the market and new stocks are not expected in several months.

I have a SEAL pup. I like it. It's pretty sharp out of the box. I've never really used it for anything though.

Get a copy of the Cabela's catalog. I ordered the full-size SOG Seal Knife from Cabela's for $99 last summer.

I too have never used it for anything but I like having it!

Here's a question for all SOG fans out there. Price differential aside, which knife would you choose if either one was offerred to you as a free gift?

GOVERNMENT AGENT, TRIDENT or SOG TECH?

Any reasons for your choice?

Government, definitely Goverment

I have an SOG Government. I don't use it a great deal (mostly for camping), but it is a great knife. I personally like the tacky (as in non-slip) rubber covering on the handle over the handle on the Trident. My $2.0*10^-2....

I also own a Seal "Pup"...

It's a nice knife. Stays sharp for a long time and doesn't weigh too much. My only complaint is the serrations on the back third of the blade. I need a better sharpening system for serrated blades.
Oh, great Kydex sheath. Provision for carry everywhere. (Boot, belt, etc...)
