Something goes "bump" in the night...how to bring extra ammo/

Ed, I'll coming marching to the sound of the cannon! Rally, boys, a THRer needs our help against the invading hordes. (Where's my map of Red?):D

Nate, I'm not going "out there." If I have to leave my strong point of the FBP (jump out the window and use my "runlikealittlegirl fu"), I can stuff the two extra pistol mags and my bug in my running shorts and the extra shotgun ammo is on the weapon.

When I get my HD gun (come on FinAid...), I will have a sling/bandolier and a buttcuff for storage, as well as 7 in the tube. I am still a little wary of keeping it "Cocked, locked, and ready to rock" as I am still new to firearms (although I sleep next to a Yugo 24/47 with 10 in the buttcuff). My father also has an adamant desire/demand that all firearms be unloaded, no matter their purpose.

Soooo....provided I convince my father or move out, it will be "Cocked, Locked, and Ready to Rock" with a slew more rounds on the gun.

Well, my 12 guage has both a sidesaddle on the receiver and a saddle on the buttstock as well, with extra rounds.

But if'n you've got a pistol, I'd imagine the pistol in one hand, flashlight in other, extra mags in some Thunderwear would work - just put on Thunderwear as your jammies, and keep extra mags near bed with pistol.

I wonder if it matters:

Thinking it through from the other side:
  • If I'm a bad guy looking for "goodies" in the middle of the night, I'm probably trying to stay quiet and not wake anyone up (until I want 'em awake in some scenarios, depending on how you define "goodies.")
  • If I encounter a homeowner, I can choose to run or confront.
  • If I choose to confront and the first round doesn't take my head off, I'll probably bail unless I walked into this planning on a confrontation.
  • If I'm planning on a confrontation, the dude defending his home better have something to punch through armor (like a rifle), and he'd better open fire first. An additional pistol mag ain't the solution here.

I'm gonna order one of those Wilderness safepackers.

I can probably clip my taclight, cell phone and two spare mags in that thing. Problem with the phone is I gotta figure out how to disable that stupid backlit keypad (giving away your position and ruining your nightvision is highly untactical). Maybe run an earpiece up the shoulder strap so I can use the thing hands free and still use my taclight, manipulate doors, grab soju from the refrigerator, etc.

Bump in the night, I'm grabbing my pump shotgun. All the ammo I should need is right on board, 8 in the tube and 6 more on the butt cuff.

I also have a military type canvas gunbelt hanging in my safe with a holster for my 1911 and two pouches with mags in them. Who knows if I'd have opportunity to grab my pistol and it, but it's there anyway.

I have a full security system with monitoring. If the alarm goes off [ and it has] I keep my briefcase by the bed, with my 1911 and two spare mags, plus my 5 cell mag lite inside. I open the briefcase, remove the equipment, chamber a load, engage the safety, and check the security pad to locate where the intrusion is. I go check it while my better half fields the phone call from the security companies response to the alarm. They wait to see if reinforcements will be needed. I carry the ex-GI belt pouch with the extra mags in the same hand that holds the mag-lite. Usually the alarm is enough to move the goobers along.:D

"What? You boys dont have a big dog?"
Yep,thats my solution too! I'm fairly confiident i'll have plenty of warning.7shots in my 357,and 6 in the wife's 44 oughtabe enuff!
:D

Yeah, I have a medium size dog, but he's a coward. He barks alert for catapillars, for God's sake.:uhoh: :what:

Howdy Skunk- How you be? If I was as tactical as you I could see in the dark and shoot through speeding Locomotives.:p I guess I had better get me one of those skunks- how do you get used to the smell?:scrutiny:

In my particular dwelling I use my CCWs. I do have spare mags, but I have little 'sq. footage' compared to some...and I'm 3 floors up. I do have a " line of fire' ( furniture). Worst case...well there is rope and I alley-oop off the back deck. (in case of fire too).
There may or may not be a hidden gun on back deck.:) My deck is NOT accessible from anyone. You now know why I use RIG and why I use the stuff I do...freezing cold, blistering heat, that "maybe" gun will work. ;)

Have a plan...have a back up plan...have a back up back up plan...

I hear a bump in the night, I get up, grab the gun, wake the SO,
tell her to get the kids into the saferoom, then position myself so
I can watch the stairs.

When they're all in the saferoom, I go there, as well, and I call the
cops.

Spare mags?

They're in the safe room.

Skunk- Hia kum Chinee nei bo. He nam is Lei Ying Lo, sum meen gai tli lin ching him, he sa wai hang mi, dumgai. Yu stin ki po, pla wee skunk, yu go nao, dum gai! Ai no pei fo skunk, I go hai ding nao an wa shing stin ki off.

just not paranoid enough to worry about it, personally.

My shotgun (primary HD) has a sidesaddle with 5 more 2&3/4" 00 Buckshot shells.

If I grab my 1911, I'll just have to make do with 9 rds. (8 rd chip mccormick mag, 1 in the pipe).

Either way, I guess if it's an entire pack of rabid werewolves I'll be taking a dirt nap.

Shouldn't be a problem since I don't go hunting for gremlins in the dark. If they want to wake the dogs and come up the stairs there will be enough ammuniton to address the problem. Anyway, 30 rounds should be plenty, but twice that is just right.

I'm surprised at how many people grab handguns as their primary defensive weapon at home.

Not good or bad, just surprised. Obviously, in some homes, a handgun can be better than a long gun because of size/space constraints.

That said, I plan on grabbing my Mossberg pump. I've been wanting a 55-round bandoleer for some time, but haven't gotten it yet.

If ~60 rounds of 12ga don't do the job, I don't think anything will. :(

:)
