I was at a deposition last week, and one of the attorneys there had a daughter who just turned 21. He was very proud of her decision on her birthday to get into a club for the first time and start drinking the night away.

One of my sons had just turned 21 as well, so I mentioned that he doesn't drink, so he didn't go bar hopping, but the first thing he DID do was send off his application to get his conceal/carry permit.

Well, you'd think I'd just let a two octave 100 decibel fart loose in church.

He was APPALLED that my son would do such a thing. But he was very proud of his 21 year old daughter for getting drunk with a bunch of guy friends on her birthday. :scrutiny:

Hey, if he's okay with his daughter getting smashed on her 21st birthday, good for him. I just didn't understand the indignation about my kid getting his conceal/carry permit on his birthday.

Good thing I didn't say anything about the Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 380 I had in my pocket at the time. :D

Yup. Sending off my CCW application was the first thing I did at 21.
Donating blood was the first thing I did on my 18th birthday.
Notice a trend?

On a whole, I'd say gun folks tend to be good folks.

i did the exact same thing.....

i dont really drink, alcohol doesnt really appeal to me........so when i turned 21, i skipped the bars........but my CCW application was at the local PD the same day.

Being just barely over 21, my permit application was dropped off at the local PD on the same day also...

Yet I'm also among those that don't drink, or smoke. I've bought cigars for my girls father though, and bought liquor for my father as a gift, and I've been donating blood for the past year.

I can't possibly imagine why anyone would be PROUD of getting drunk...

The first two things I did when I turned 21 was buy another pistol and get my permit. I already had a 1911. I wish I still had it.

I got the packet for a license on my 21st, but since I lived/live in NY, I didn't end up going through with it. I think I had a beer while waiting for a cow to calve that night, though.

It comes from a cultural obsession with the prohibition for everyone under 21. Countries which expose children to responsible drinking earlier would reduce the problem.

Children who grow up with responsible gun ownership generally treat guns responsibly.

I have never yet pulled off a 2 octave, 100 dB fart, let alone in a church.

Good comparison.

Well we didn't have a CHL law back then so I got drunk; come to think of it I did a lot of dumb things that year, like marry my ex-wife. I was much smarter on my 36th birthday and got my CHL; right got rid of the wife!

I suppose that I am the odd man out here. The first thing that I did when I turned 21 was get drunk. I agree with Neverwinter 100%. The irony of the situation was, I was in a country that didn't have an age limit to drink in the first place. I couldn't have bought a gun there anyway, but when I got back home I did.

When I turned 21 I was on patrol in Alaska with 6 months left to go on my 4 year hitch.

Not everyone believes in joyless puritanism.

It sounds like he works hard to succeed and make sure his family is happy.

Gotta remember that you were talking to a lawyer. Well indoctrinated in law school. Most lawyers that I know are extremely Liberal with the usual hypocrisy.

I see that you are in the same town as me Pcoladawg. Wonder if that lawyer is someone I know?

I've been drinking since I was 16, at 21 I wasn't really concerned with "partying it up", but then I can't remember my 21st birthday at all, so I imagine I was pretty hammered. I was living in Illinois at the time and though I always liked firearms, I had never bothered to get my FOID

He is from Tallahassee.

Please explain. If you believe me or my kid are 'joyless puritans' simply because we don't drink, then you clearly don't know us very well.

My beef wasn't with HIS value system so much as his dissing of mine. I don't care if people drink. More power to 'em. And I didn't have anything negative to say to him about his daughter going to a club. I was just surprised when he became negative and appalled about my kid getting his conceal/carry license.

He was okay with his daughter going out with the express purpose of getting drunk, and then thought it was highly irresponsible of my kid for applying for his conceal/carry permit. I think that's an odd way to look at things. That's all. :)

Well, I may have miscommunicated. I wasn't appalled that the guy's daughter went out and got drunk when she turned 21. That's not an unusual thing and, even though that's not what I did, I know it's common and usually a fun, harmless, time is had by all.

I just thought it odd that he was okay with his daughter doing that, but thought it was highly irresponsible of my son getting his CCW as his first act as a 21 year old.

Heck I waited 2 weeks after my 21st before I had my first drink. I was to busy hemorrhaging money on new S&W revolvers!

Well, I may have miscommunicated.

No, it was me that miscommunicated. :) I didn't mean to imply that your son's decision was wrong or that the values were misplaced at all. In fact, I think it's quite the opposite. Well done!

PcolaDawg, I hope my daughter is with a man such as your son once she is that old.

Good for you. Props to you papa....you've done well. Take a minute, sit back, and feel at ease because you raised a great guy. I hope that I do as well as you, I'm trying my damdest.

Good post.

Thanks! Based on some of the replies, I got the impression that I may have offended some of those that enjoy imbibing which was NOT the intended purpose of my post.

Some - okay, just about all - of my best friends drink adult beverages and enjoy it (responsibly) very much. :D

My 21st birthday was THE day we pulled in from WestPac, into a tiny town called Port Townsend, Washington. 5 bars in town, got thrown out of three of them. Party got so out of hand a LTJG decked an RM1 friend of mine in front of 6 CPOs...that was some good times right there. What I can remember of it, that is. Quit doing things like that many years ago, after I got out of the navy, realized it was a huge waste of time and money. Got my first CCW permit in 1994, a few years after that big 21 party, but in my defense, 1994 was when we finally GOT a CCW permit system in AZ. :)

Heck I hired a whole Pub for my 21st, tho for the money I spent I could've bought myself a NOS select fire M14 off Gunbroker. or about 250 Moisins.:what:

Should've bought guns. They would`ve Been a much better investment.:(
