Today, my son is left for Camp Perry to shoot in the pistol portion of The Natonial Matches.

I am a proud, and somewhat envious, Dad tonight.

When I was about 12 I used to read our neighbor's old American Rifleman magazines. The stories about the rifle portion of the Nationals got to me big time. I was living on an island in the East Caroline Islands in the Pacific at the time and there was no competitive shooting at all.

Back in the states I took up Bullseye pistol at 14 (the same age as my son did all these years later). He has received excellent coaching, I got nothing anywhere near as good. I knew no one who went to Perry then either. My son got into a local Jr. Pistol Team last fall, and has learned a whole lot since then. He also seems to have more natural talent than his old man.

There were rifle matches 95 miles away all the time I was shooting on the Jr. ROTC rifle tearm in high school, but I never learned about them. By the time I started shooting rifle matches in the 1980s asthma was coming on fast. I knew some folks who shot pistol at Perry then, but I didn't think I could handle the heat and humidity at Perry then.

So, I'm living vicariously, to a degree, now. My son is supposed to e-mail reports on the matches. I'm looking forward to them. :)

Good Luck!!

Well, I wish your son well. I am headed up to Camp Perry for the first time myself this weekend. So I have no idea what to expect! Sounds like your son will do well!

Camp Perry this weekend

My girlfriend and I are flying in on Friday. There was still a module left on base today. (modules have air conditioners and linen service) I'm going to shoot the Presidents Pistol match and the EIC pistol match. I've been with the rifle team several years in a row but never been there for pistol.

By now my son has finished the Small Arms Firing School.

I think he's firing the Made In America .22 match today.

I expect he's made a few trips to Commercial Row too. He took some of his own cash along to take to the Row--I like that in a boy.

I am sure I stayed in the huts right across from your son. They were all really nice kids and behaved great (can't necessarily say that for ourselves). I don't think they did as well as they would have liked but few did, the winds were brutal.

Well this is a bit late, but hey, what the heck.

This is Ethan (ACP's son). I actually got back quite a while ago (the 16th of July) with, I'm happy to say, the Made In America match winner's plaque in hand :D

I shot a 2106-22x. Wasn't exactly what I wanted to see as my final score, but it was good enough. (I actually broke 700 that day, which made me one happy shooter :D)

Looking forward to getting back there next year, this time to shoot the team matches with the Ottawa Sportsmen's Club junior team. By that time I should have a Marvel, a custom Springfield .45, and be shooting 90s across the board with the .22, and Sharpshooter level scores with the .45 :D

Oh, and hello to jefmad. You guys were great neighbors!
