Today, my son is left for Camp Perry to shoot in the pistol portion of The Natonial Matches.
I am a proud, and somewhat envious, Dad tonight.
When I was about 12 I used to read our neighbor's old American Rifleman magazines. The stories about the rifle portion of the Nationals got to me big time. I was living on an island in the East Caroline Islands in the Pacific at the time and there was no competitive shooting at all.
Back in the states I took up Bullseye pistol at 14 (the same age as my son did all these years later). He has received excellent coaching, I got nothing anywhere near as good. I knew no one who went to Perry then either. My son got into a local Jr. Pistol Team last fall, and has learned a whole lot since then. He also seems to have more natural talent than his old man.
There were rifle matches 95 miles away all the time I was shooting on the Jr. ROTC rifle tearm in high school, but I never learned about them. By the time I started shooting rifle matches in the 1980s asthma was coming on fast. I knew some folks who shot pistol at Perry then, but I didn't think I could handle the heat and humidity at Perry then.
So, I'm living vicariously, to a degree, now. My son is supposed to e-mail reports on the matches. I'm looking forward to them.
