My son turns 12 next month and says he'd like to go on an Elk hunt with his uncles. Sounds like a couple good reasons to get his first .06! It's a S&W 1500. Searching around, I guess these were made for S&W by Howa back in the early 80s. The wood and finish are great. Shoots 3" high at 75yds with some cheap Winchester 150gr PP. I was worried about the recoil but my son didn't even notice. All in all we're both pretty happy with it

Those are nice rifles. I'd suggest much lower rings, especially with that stock design. That is an older style stock with a lot of drop designed to line up your eyes with the iron sights. If you're going to use a scope it needs to be as close to the action as possible so you don't have to rest your chin on the stock to see through it.

Fine looking rifle. Now do that young man a favor and get him some lower scope mounts. I'm guessing those are so high because they're see-thru for the iron sights, but that really puts him at a disadvantage when using the scope. Rings like the Leupold QRWs will let you mount the scope low, but also remove it without tools if it fails on a hunt and you need to access the irons.

Sweet, I was 12 when I got my first hunting rifle. Also a 30-06 although mine was a Remington. Any other hunting rifle your son buys later in life will be out of choice, not need.
