Sort of a strange question....

Yep.

Deafness is often a matter of degrees, and most of us who've lost hearing definately want to keep what's left.

As for the profoundly, "stone" deaf, I don't know.

That is an odd question.
My Mother and Step-father are both profoundly deaf. She probably has never shot a gun, I'll ask my step-father and get back to you.

40% loss in my left ear and 80% in my right .

Although the loss was not firearm related I don't need to loose any more than I have already. I wear protection .

I would guess that even the totaly deaf person would be better served by wearing protection. After all - modern medical technoligy maybe able to help the deaf in the near future - and that help could require that parts of the ear that would sustain damage (from shooting), remain intact.
