I know S&B makes (or made) a 196 gr JSP in .318 diameter for old 98 sporters or 88 Commission Rifles.

Anybody know of a vendor with some in stock? Midway just has the JR version. Ammoseek was not helpful in differentiating J and JS.

Thanks!

It this the cartridge you're looking for? Rimmed?

Sorry- It is not.

I am looking for the rimless 8x57 loading with the .318 bullet. This was the original 8mm Mauser from 1888 until 1905, when the larger .323 bullet was adopted in German service. The smaller bullet continued to be used in sporting arms for many more years. S&B has loaded this ammo in the recent past, and may still do so for the thousands of surviving rifles so chambered in Europe. The rimmed version of both bore sizes was commonly used in break open guns.

I think if you size your bore, you will find it is close to .323". The old 8X57 J was made with an undersize bullet, so gas could escape around the bullet -- early smokeless powders were unpredictable, and this was a way of holding down pressures. The primary difference between 8X57J and 8XJS barrels is throating. Many 8X57J barrels were simply re-throated and used with 8X57JS ammunition. The general rule is that if a round will chamber easily, it is safe to shoot.

if i know my mauser knowledge is right, the cartridge youre looking for is basically the M/88 cartridge, its basically the same case as the WWII cartridge but uses the .318 bullet... its rimless (as opposed to the IR, IRS

if youre trying to duplicate the old M/88 cartridge all ive ever seen these old rifles using with original ammo was cast lead round nose bullets (I) or the spitzer (IS)

have you considered handloading for it?
