Looks like I have sold another rifle on GunBroker. I don't have a box to ship it in. Can anyone suggest a ready source for a suitable box? Gun shop discards? Flower boxes? ???

Thanks,

Drakejake

A section of light weight PVC pipe of suitable diameter. Or you could go buy one of the $12 plastic gun cases that Wal-Mart usually has for sale.

Isn't it obvious? You are supposed to buy another rifle and use the box from the new purchase to ship the one you sold.....it's a circle of life kinda thing.

The boxes that the CMP uses to ship their rifles out are very sturdy; heavy cardboard with a foam insert. They are also unmarked save for the shipping label. The CMP sells them but they are pricey at $25 each.

You might try asking on the CMP Discussion Forum http://www.odcmp.org/new_forum/ to see if there is anyone in your area who has purchased a CMP rifle and would be willing to part with a shipping box.

I usually call up academy or another store that sells guns (I've never tried Walmart but you might try them).

They always have tons of long boxes, and they are usually pretty happy to have me come grab them, since otherwise they fill their dumpster space pretty quickly.

I maintain a good relationship with my local gun shop. One of the benefits is that I never have trouble getting rifle shipping boxes. They always have dozens laying around, and will give me whatever I want. Ask at your local shop -- the worst they can do is say no, and I doubt they will.

If you have enough volume to justify it, Brownells sells shipping cartons. Product no. is 084-024-000. I usually buy a $9.95 gun case from Cabelas, Bass Pro, etc., and ship the gun in the case, inside the cardboard box that the case comes in.

I often do that, too. In listings for long guns, I state that a hard case is available for a $20 refundable deposit, and that I'm not responsible for guns damaged in transit if the buyer opts not to pay for the hard case. The actual case typically costs me in the $12-15 range, and the box it came in can be used to ship it to a buyer (or buyer's FFL) with a firearm inside.

My advice is to go to Costco or a sporting goods store that sells bikes. Get old bike boxes, unfold them. Then cut them with a box cutter properly so they fold up like a 6-sized rectangular box. Free, plenty big enough for even the meanest of 50BMGs.

The US Post Office has a neat box for free that is a re inforced triangle. Holds a rifle perfectly. You can legally ship a rifle (as a mere citizen) to an FFL via USPS.

Alternatively go to a UPS Store or to a Mail Boxes Etc and purchase a piece of flat cardboard for 5 bucks. Create your own Triangle box. Easy and very strong.

Check out the boxes that golf clubs are shipped in. Your local sporting goods store should also have some of those. Gives a whole new meaning to shipping some "irons". :D
