i live in new york... yeah, it sucks to be a bit of a gun collector while i live here.. and lately ive been thinking of going with an FAL or a CETME type rifle, however these do not appear to be new york legal and i was wondering if anyone knows an inexpensive source of aquiring these with features to make them legal.. for example, a brazed on muzzle break, no bayo lug... and a pistol grip is OK as long as the stock isnt telescoping.

CT sucks just a little harder than NY. However, http://www.ptr91.com/ is based in CT, so i imagine they'll have some options that will work for you.

On the brighter side, you guys can have folding stocks....

If you don't mind used, check Gunbroker and other sites for anything made between 1994 and 2004 that is in its original configuration. I believe the NYS ban is almost the same as the expired federal ban.

DSA and Entreprise make California-legal FALs with fixed mags and stripper clip covers. There are also various FAL options with removable mags and either a plain muzzle or a permanent brake, which would probably be OK in NYS.

pretty much word for word with the exception of the sunset clause. i am in the same boat being in NY. Animus, local gun shops are your best bet, most distributors won't touch shipping to NY. CDNN wont even ship a handgun to NY, not even revolvers. Online auctions are good too if you dont mind "used".

looks like my best bet would be to wait till i had more money and build one from new parts, but if thats the case im more likely to go M14 or AR10

If you watch the auction sites you'll see a decent number of barely used or even LNIB FALs that are ban-compliant for well under $1000, sometimes closer to $600. The earlier Century-assembled FALs had IMBEL receivers (one of the best) and nicer condition parts than most later stuff. Although Century doesn't have the greatest reputation, an FAL is easy to assemble and it's easy to check headspace, the one thing that potentially would have been screwed up. People don't do it as much now, but FAL assembly from parts kits was about as common as AR-15 assembly is now, and it's almost as easy.

Similarly, earlier DSA STG-58's had the cleanest Austrian parts and still had DSA's excellent forged 4140 receiver. If you want an FAL, it shouldn't be hard to find a ban-compliant FAL for less money than an M1A or AR-10 type.
