Sir,

As an Illinois businessman and firearms enthusiast, I was disheartened to see the news that you joined the Mayors against Illegal Guns organization. Your statement printed in the press, is particularly of concern.

“It is my opinion that this coalition of mayors isn’t about trying to take guns away from law abiding Americans or stopping the legal sale of guns and ammunition.”

From the Mayors Against Illegal Guns website, I quote:

“Keep lethal, military-style weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines off our streets.”

I would like to point out that you cannot have it both ways, sir. If you support the private ownership of legal guns and ammunition, by nature, you MUST support the right of the individual to own military style weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines. Otherwise, you ARE, in fact, against the private ownership of legally purchased firearms.

As a Federally licensed collector of Curios and Relics of War, and a wealthy businessman, I have accumulated a wide variety of firearms which are of an historical significance.

Included with this collection are “Military Style” specimens, and many authentic military specimens, categorized as:

• Prior to WWI (such as my 30-40 Krag),
• World-War I era specimens (such as my 1903 Springfield),
• World War 2 specimens (Mausers, Swiss K31, Mosin Nagants, Lee-Enfields, along with a myriad of military rifles converted to a legal semi-auto configuration using the original parts of demilitarized weapons - German MG-34, German MG-42, and so on)
• Korea/Vietnam era specimens (AR-15, AK-47, SKS, RPD belt fed, and other weapons built in legal, semi-auto configuration)
• Post-Vietnam era specimens

I find your breed of gun control particularly loathsome, as you purport to uphold the individual rights of gun owners, while simultaneously demonizing legitimate collectors and gun enthusiasts. You say there is no purpose to owning such weapons; I heartily disagree with you, sir. I have, personally, passed an FBI background check to receive my licensing, and my character as a business man, family man as a father of 5 wonderful children, and community leader is unquestionable.

This sort of two-faced politics is unacceptable, and will not be tolerated.

Even though I am not your constituent, I will utilize my wealth and influence to contribute directly to your opposition in the next election.

Have a nice day, sir.

Nice, mine was shorter, but similar. :)

I live 14 miles from C'dale, and before today shopped there often, but not anymore.

Next time he's up for re-election, if he is opposed, PM me and I'll make good on my word.

If he is really this uninformed on the topic, he should just sit down and be silent.

"Do we want crazies out there with any type of guns?" he asked, "Do we want anybody to be able to go out to a gun show and purchase some automatic weapon like that and then they just turn around and go to a grade school and slaughter a bunch of innocent little children?"

The Bloomberg group is badly named. Its clear but unofficial agenda is to make all privately held guns illegal, so its name should be "Mayors Against Private Ownership of Guns."

But how many mayors would dare join a group with that name?

"Do we want anybody to be able to go out to a gun show and purchase some automatic weapon like that and then they just turn around and go to a grade school and slaughter a bunch of innocent little children?"

Fritzler said the Coalition of Mayors isn't about taking guns away from law -biding citizens or stopping the legal sale of guns.

Your mayor is an idiot or lying, or both. Carbondale is close enough to Ft. Campbell he should know the difference between "some automatic weapon", a machine gun, and a semiautomatic rifle. He also should know that the last time something like Sandy Hook happened was 20 years ago so we're not likely to see another crazy attack one of the nearly 100,000 grade schools in our country again for a while. It isn't like because the good mayor wet the bed once that he's going to do it every week, is it, so why does he think something that occurs once every 20 years or so will happen every day he wakes up afraid of an inanimate object?

He was back on the TV news tonight, repeating that same line about "automatic weapons being bought at gun shows"

They're trying to push to ban gun shows from being held on public property.
Some enterprising politicians here in Dallas of all places are floating the same idea. I'm sure all the money they've been raking in from these things just caused a lapse of sanity, though.

"Do we want anybody to be able to go out to a gun show and purchase some automatic weapon like that and then they just turn around and go to a grade school and slaughter a bunch of innocent little children?"

I would call out how stupid this statement is, and everything wrong with it, but then again, my mayor was refusing to allow aerial mosquito spraying this last West Nile season because "they spray above the trees, and there's no mosquitoes there" :banghead:

It isn't like because the good mayor wet the bed once that he's going to do it every week
But that may be cause for him to buy himself a pair of rubber pants :D

BCCL,

I'm having trouble finding where the outlets have comment ability. How do we call him a liar in public so that everyone else sees it?

not surprised. Carbondale is like the Hippie mecca of illinois. SIUC has a lot to do with that.

For sure, although my local FFL that does transfers for me, works at SIUC. :)

Only been an FFL for a couple of years, nice guy, charges a flat $20.00 for any tranfer, not matter what the gun is.

Did my part on it

Learning the facts is as simple as looking at the DoJ's FBI Uniform Crime Report so there really isn't any excuse for a politician not to know the facts. You'll be struck by the how few rifles were used in murders (sorry, we can't know for certain what percentage are the ones the Mayor wants to ban) last year. Notice that it is a smaller number than the year before, and the year before, and the year before, and... Well, you get the idea that along with violent crime rates falling since the expiration of the vaunted AWB the murder rate has been falling and the number of rifles used in murders have been falling. Matter of fact all the murders in 2012 that were committed with rifles make up only 2.5% of the murder in the entire US. If IL parses that information further to whether the rifle is a single shot or lever/pump or semi auto like many states do they'd see that less than a quarter are even semi auto. That drops the percentage to 0.6% are the ones the Mayor is afraid of and wants to ban. Roughly 80 Mini 14 rifles for the entire population of 314 million people were used in murders. 80 for the entire country. Notice 9 times as many people were beaten to death with hands or feet. 9 times as many people were beaten to death with hands and feet. 20 times as many were murdered with blades. Matter of fact rifles were about the least used murder weapon identified by the FBI. Why does the Mayor want to ban the least dangerous of weapons for the nation instead of addressing the real causes of violent crime overall or the specific causes of the insane young men that carry out or attempt mass murders? Why doesn't he actually care about the actual problem? http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/uc...s.-2011/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-8

Predictably, perhaps, I have not received a response at this time to my e-mail to the mayor. :)

I received a response.

Printed in full:

Dear Mr. {redacted},

A few people have responded to my Press Release with the expected responses so, I want to clear up any confusion about my position on gun ownership/control.

First of all, as a gun owner myself, I am not opposed to the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. However, when the writers of the Second Amendment wrote about the right to bear arms, they had muzzle-loaded, flintlock rifles in mind so, in the past, I’ve somewhat sarcastically suggested that perhaps the government should issue every “able-minded” citizen a flintlock rifle.

I doubt their capacity to do much of anything but, I am in support of the IL General Assembly passing a conceal carry law. State Rep. Brandon Phelps of Southern Illinois has been a sponsor of such a bill and, as I understand it, there would be some pretty strict restrictions required in order to keep such permits out of the hands of the “crazies.” I can imagine that the FBI licensing process is stringent so, I hope that I’m not wrong to assume that you wouldn’t support letting every Tom, Dick, or Harry walking down the street to freely have such a permit.

It seems that some people, that responded to my Press Release, believe that the 20 children that were recently slaughtered via gun violence, and every other child or innocent adult that were gunned down before or since then, are considered acceptable collateral losses; in order for them to enjoy their “toys” which may be capable of piercing armor plate a state away. I, on the other hand, do not.

It is my hope that one day this great nation of ours will join the civilized world and give up our barbaric ways of slaughtering our own. I understand that even U.S. military personnel are more likely to die from gun fire here in the U.S. than while stationed abroad (even in Afghanistan and previously in Iraq). In 2006, I was selected as one of four Americans by the National League of Cities for a McCloy Fellowship in Urban Affairs. We spent three weeks in seven German cities learning about the municipal forms gov’ts in Germany. One of my fellow Americans was a Lt. from the Phoenix Police Dept. While in Cologne, which has a similar population to Phoenix (just over 1 million; 31% immigrants, 17% non-German), we learned that in 2005, Cologne had three murders compared to over 300 murders in Phoenix.

It is time for all Americans, who believe that we all have “…certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”, to say, “Enough is enough.”, and take back control of “our” country from the crazies and the criminals.

I make a whopping fifty-seven cents an hour as Mayor of Carbondale so, I neither have nor want the luxury of lingering in the clouds behind the protection of an ivory tower. As a mayor of Anytown, USA, it is my sole duty to stand for my neighbor’s children and provide for the public’s health and safety. Perhaps in 27 months, when this term is up, I’ll decide to “have a nice day,” as you suggested, and work on my wife’s “To Do List” but, until then I’ll continue to fulfill my Duty to God and Country. In the meanwhile, feel free to support my future opponents; in fact, I’ll be sure to forward them your email message.

Sincerely,

Joel Fritzler, Mayor

(I plan on responding in a day or two, health permitting; fighting influenza at the moment so my online time is limited to when I'm able to sit up; in the meantime feel free to offer input to guide my response to be most effective.)

Also, the most startling point, is this Illinois southern mayor is taking his firearms legislation tips from post-Nazi demilitarized Germany?????

thoughts removed (until I'm thinking clearly... not good to formulate ideas for a debate when you've got a fever)

Feel free to shop wherever you want but, as a mayor of Anytown, USA, it is my sole duty to stand for my neighbor’s children and provide for the public’s health and safety. I would encourage you to run for a public office in your community or county so that you would understand the responsibilities that comes with being a public servant. Perhaps in 27 months, when this term is up, I’ll decide to relax but, until then I’ll continue to fulfill my Duty to God and Country.

Sincerely,

Joel Fritzler, Mayor

I fired off a letter a couple of minutes ago. Can't wait to hear back from him.
