SP101 9mm... thoughts?

Co-worker has a 3" SP101 in 9mm that he wants $295 for. Gun appears to be in excellent overall condition. Anyone have any thoughts on this gun / price?

Buy it!!!

The Ruger SP-101 is built like a tank. And 9mm SPs usually command a lot more. I'm not positive, but I think 9mm SPs have been discontinued. Don't quote me on that.

If you don't want it at that price, tell him I'm interested.

I just sold my SP101 2 1/4 inch 9mm for $500.00. and the buyer drove 350 miles each way to complete the transaction twice.

That is a great price for a great gun....................grab it now!

I never understood 9mm revolvers. If I'm going to carry a 9mm I want 15 rounds, not 6.

For an SP101 in 9mm in excellent condition for under $300 ... yeah, I'd jump on that deal. I probably would have paid $400 on the spot just for the uniqueness of that caliber in an SP. I've never really looked for a 9mm revolver, but I really like the SP101 and wouldn't hesitate at that price.

You'd better take him up on that on Monday before he changes his mind or finds another buyer. Better yet, call him tonight and have him bring it to work on Monday with your name on it.

I've only shot one...1 time. IT was IMO, nice. Easy to shoot well, acceptably accurate and looked nice too. At that price, I'd buy it

Alright I'll be the one naysayer. The gun may be unusual and have good resale value but that only counts if you sell/trade your guns. I for one am more of an accumulator. I carry the sp101 for CCW and find it very shootable W/ fullhouse .357 it might be an awful lot of gun to lug around for 9mm. I also bought mine brand new for $325. If you really like the gun and the action is nice and tight then by all means buy it.

I am not familure with the SP101 but one question I would ask is whether or not moon clips are required. I had a friend that bought a brand new .45acp revolver (I don't recall the make and model) and found that it required moon clips. For some reason he really didn't like having to deal with moon clips. After only about 25 rounds through it he took it back (losing $100).

Yes, moon clips are used in the 9mm SP101.

Made arrangements to purchase the gun... it includes a bunch of moon clips. Will post pics during the week. I will try it out for awhile, and if I decide I don't like it I will offer it for sale.

The SP-101 is about the only reason I can think of for owning a 9mm. You will enjoy the convenience of the moon clips.

I have a 642 that I converted to 9mm(new cylinder) and it is great, I wish that S&W would have made more 9mm K and J frames. I also can take that cylinder out of the 642 and put it into my 60-4 and that is about the same as a sp-101. Great gun get it and shoot it, you will not break it.

Buy it as quick as you can. The 9mm SP commands a big premium over the standard calibers and is well worth it in my book. Mine has turned into a big favorite of mine as it's a great shooter with hardly any recoil. The 9mm gets a lot of use from the short tube as compared to the .357 version (which I also have) so the two are closer in power than you might think. Moon clips make for great speedloaders and work very well.

You know I always wanted one of those. but how heavy is it really for a 9mm. If I'm going to pack a nine I prefer it be easy to lug around.

I have a S&W 940 which is the stainless, hammerless, snub nosed 5 shot, in 9mm, and it uses moon clips. So a Ruger in 9mm should be fine, and it looks like a great price.

For SaxonPig, I can answer the question of "why" one would want such a gun. It was my back-up to my police service weapon, also 9mm at the time. I didn't like the durability history of my issued semi-auto, and wanted a no jam, no rust, extra gun that shot issued ammo in case my semi had a catastrophic failure, OR if some schmucks in a crowd went for my gun, I could keep it in the holster, and get out something to use in my weak hand. I figured a working 5 shot was better than a broken 15 shot.

As to why... I've never understood this kind of question. Why not? Why a single shot Ruger #1 when you can have an M4? Cripes... I have a concealed carry holster for my 3" Vaquero.
