Just a quick question here, folks:

If I had a SP101 with a spurred hammer, how easy would it be to replace it with a spurless hammer?

Can I simply order a spurless hammer from Midway (or whomever), or will Ruger insist that I send it in for the work?

Thanks!

I have not tried this yet, but I am going to get a regular hammer to replace my spurless hammer.

One thing you might think about is grinding the spur down a bit, but not necessarily off.

Bill Jordan recommended this in order to reduce the possibility of a snag but to still allow for single action shooting if you wanted/needed to.

Ruger will do it for you but you will have to send it in for fitting. I don't know of any supplier that will sell you a hammer as I beieve it is a Ruger controlled Item in that they don't sell them. It's a pretty easy job just to lop off the hammer spur if you're a little handy, if not then a local smith can do it for you and shouldn't charge much at all. I personally prefer the spur, I have one of each and just prefer the choice, if I was going to pocket carry I'd go spurless though.

Ruger hammers are factory restricted items. That means hammers will be sold ONLY for factory installation.

The good news is, Ruger does hammer switches at very reasonable prices.

You can also have the hammer spur cut off, but the Ruger spur-less hammer is a neater, smoother option.

Ok, thanks for the info, guys.

I asked because I got my eye on a SP101, but all the models i've seen around town have hammer spurs. It's actually not a big deal; I don't think having a spur would be a big downside or anything, I just prefer a spurless hammer for this kinda deal.

I have a high speed grinder, grinding wheel and polisher and all that. I may think about doing it myself.
