Guy asked me last night if I’m still looking for a shooter M58. Yup, if reasonable. Says he has a pal with one in nice shape, 90%+ finish, excellent mechanically, no box. The third party bought it new for some $239 or 289 or the like, several years back. My friend says he thinks it can be had for $300 to $350.

I assume this is a fair price, right? In any case, M58s are rather thin upon the ground in this area. The 57s are more plentiful, and tend to go for a little lower prices.

I’m just hoping it looks good and has stocks I can live with. I’ve been wanting a 58 for some years now, but haven’t actively sought one.

C.R.Sam - - I’m also interested in the load y’all worked up for the 57. I’d probably be happy with something similar to the Rem 210 LSWC factory load.

I dunno what, if anything, a 58 will do for me that my .45 Colt Mtn Gun or short .44 SBKH won’t, but, hey, S&W N-Frames are their own justification, huh?

Thanks for the input.

It sounds like a pretty good price for a M58 to me.
I paid more for my factory nickel one.

A load idea, if you'd like one.
My 57, 58 and .41 Mag Ruger Redhawks all shoot 210 grain LSWC bullets well with enough old Unique under them to get 1,000 fps, or so. I've used Winchester and Remington Large Pistol primers.

I would get it at $300. I would ponder for a few minutes at $350. But, $400 and under, in great mechanical shape with a little holster wear and tear, I think they are worth it. I just bought one for $400. Had to think about it quite a bit. I have two now, so, I won't spend that kind of money again. But, I don't know how many times I've wandered Market Hall and not seen a single M58....

"S&W N-Frames are their own justification, huh"

-- i rue the day i sold a 4 inch M57 .. now i'm wiser and more financially secure and i wont pass up a quality N frame again. ever.

any N frame under $400 is a pretty good deal.. especially here in PRK

Johnny, I'm no CR Sam, but I did pick up a load for the .41 LSWC that I just love (I think it came from Mike Irwin?). Simple, too. 7 grains of 231 under a 215 grain SWC. I don't have a chrono to be sure exactly what I'm getting, but I can extrapolate from Winchester's published data, which gives 1125 for 7.4 grs under a 210 (8.375" barrel); so I figure I'm prolly running within 50 fps of a thousand, either way, from my 6" 657. What I do know is it's a dang accurate load, in my gun at least, and great fun to shoot (and surely easier on both gun and shooter than hardcore .41 mag loads). I've no doubt it'd to anything a 'police' load might reasonably be asked to do.

I appreciate all the input - -

- - Thanks for the reply. That sounds like a good load, I tend to prefer full-weight loads at moderate velocities, rather than lightweight screamers. And, if I want to shoot .44 mags, I have my SBKH. I really want something fairly staunch but accurate and pleasant to shoot.

I'll definitely be trying out your load, and probably Unique as well, with some similar bullet, per ACP230. Perhaps a few Hdy XTPs too, but this will not be a primary hunting handgun. (Always presuming I'm able to get it.)

What about the factory Remington LSWC load? Is it accurate, or does it suffer from the too-warm swaged bullet problems? Does Speer produce a Gold Dot load for .41 Mag, and if so, what weight?

I'd like to have one decent factory load for the times when I get a wild hair and want to carry the big DA on duty. I'm still an active duty deputy sheriff, and while given a lot of latitude on what we pack, we must use factory ammo.

HOLSTER - - Has anyone tried the Kramer N-frame holster as shown in the Dillon Blue Press with an M58? It shows to be for the skinny barrel pieces like the Mountain Gun and Highway Patrolman. Wonder if it works with the thick-tubed 58?

Other suggestions for belt carry? I prefer leather to plastic.

PRICE - - Yeah, sounds like the price range is okay on the prospective piece. Still haven't seen it but I trust the judgement of the friend who told me about it. If all goes well . . . .

Thanks again, all.

Christopher,

Yep, that sounds like the load that I use.

Warning, in a Model 58 it will shoot about 3 to 6" low, but it is a GREAT load for knocking over bowling pins or steel plates.

I haven't chrono'ed that load yet, but I figure out of the 4" gun I'm running about 900 to 950 fps.

Johnny,

I haven't seen a factory lead load from Remington (including on their webpage)--or anyone else for that matter (well, except big heavy hardcast loads that would be massive overkill for your LE use). Were your shoes mine, having to use factory ammo for duty carry, I'd look hard at Winchester Silvertips. 175 gr. at 1250--a little lighter and faster than I might prefer, but surely enough to do the job, a bullet with a decent reputation for performance, and by all accounts quite controllable. Actually, I'd love to work up a load for this bullet myself, if I could only get my hands on them--just the bullets, that is; no-one I know of distributes them loose :(

And no, no Gold dot in .41 (alas); they used to make one for the .41 AE that some folks apparently used in .41 mag, but no longer.

'Course, I'd expect that Winchester load--being relatively light and fast--to shoot low vis-a-vis the 58's fixed sights, but there's only one way to find out. Buy & shoot!

Does Georgia Arms count as "factory ammunition"? Their ammo comes in little plastic baggies, not boxes, but it's top notch.

I've used it before, and they offer two loads of .41 Magnum, a 210 grain jacketed hollow point round at about 1,325 feet per second, and a 210 grain lead semi-wadcutter chugging along at 1,100 feet per second, which seems what some here are interested in.

Observe.

Price? The JHP is $16.50 per 50 rounds (compared to $25 a box at my local store), $32.50 per 100 rounds, and $320.00 for 1,000 rounds. The LSWC is $14.00 per 50 rounds (making it the cheapest factory .41 Magnum load I've ever heard of), $27.50 for 100 rounds, and $270.00 for 1,000 rounds.

Happy to help, if I was indeed helpful. :)

I don't think that Remington has offered the LSWC police load in .41 Mag. for about 10 or even 15 years.

The only one that seems to be commonly available is the 215-gr. JSP load that is REALLY a thumper.

I believe that out of a 4" barrel it clocks at something like 1,250 fps for 730 ft-pounds of energy.

Any way you cut it, that's one hell of a stout load. And it certainly makes people at the range sit up and take notice!

Had some fun at my local range a while back. I had some company in the form of four guys (looked like 2 fathers with their sons) sighting in .22 squrill rifles. I was just having fun with my .41mag. with a couple different loads. I don't remember now what the loads were exactly, but I started shooting a couple mild loads with Unique and Titegroup. They got used to that then I got to some case full 2400, the first thing I heard after one of those was "what the he!! was that." Had a good time that day. Jim.
