I have heard good things about this round and thought I would try it, but....

Is there really a big difference in performance between the 9mm Speer Gold Dot 124 +P short barrel and the standard Speer Gold Dot 124 +P?
I do have a short barrel at 3" (Kahr PM9), but for the price of a SB 20 round box, I can get the standard 50 round LE box for the same price.

Any other suggestion for a good defense load in 9mm and/or in a short barrel?

Thanks

Hornady Critical Defense in 115 gr.
Remington Golden Sabers in 124 gr.non plus P.
Winchester PDX 124 gr.

I am not totally sold on Plus P with such a short handled light gun.

I think any of the rounds will work just fine. Although I would get the 50 round box so I can shoot what's not in my mags.

It'll work a little better, I don't know how much better or if it justifies the price difference, but you never know. I know it isn't scientific but maybe you could shoot one of each into some water and see what they do from your Kahr?

Or even get a box and make sure they have the same point of impact as the regular 124+P, then use the regular stuff for practice and carry the short barrel load?

Im not sold on non +P ammo from any big name American manufacturer

I like 147gr loads for short barrels
check out federal p9hst4

I carry the Speer 124gr +P for short barrels in my PM9. They cycle flawlessly in my gun.

The short barrel ammo powder is designed to produce better ballistics lost from using powders designed to be used in longer barrels. As for +P, in in Self Defense I'll take anything I can get regardless of the price. Poking holes in paper, I'd use anything.

I will probably buy both and try them, maybe I can use the cheaper to do some practice shots. (if they hit the target the same)

I also like the Federal HST write ups, but seems most places are out or do not carry them.

Because I have never shot anyone I don't know what works best, but I do use Gold Dot's in my carry nines because the gelatin tests I've seen look good and I have never had a Gold Dot fail to fire or jam in any of my nines.
