This is from my dads 11-87 Remington.
He was turkey hunting and, as usual, shot bird about a half hour after he sat down.
He didn't notice the split tube until the next time he went turkey hunting and took the gun out of the case.
He got a new barrel, I think Remington replaced it free. A gunsmith friend also cut down and re threaded the old barrel.
I can only guess as to what the issue was. I doubt there were more than 10 or 20 rounds fired through it. All would have been 6 shot lead turkey loads. I think I have a partial box of the last shells he used. The steel does look work hardened at the split.

Was the choke fully inside the barrel or one that protrudes?

Around 1995 Remington changed the steel used in there barrels. http://www.gunsmoke.com/guns/rem_lawsuit_result.html

If a steel shell was loaded by accident and fired, it may produce the results in the photo?

I remember a guy sighting in a slug gun at 50 yards. It was hit and miss. I checked the shells. Mixed in the box were slugs and # 6 shot shells. Taking a close look at the target showed it was peppered with # 6 shot.

I protrudes from the barrel. The load the split the tube was lead no 6, Federal 3 inch I think, and it killed a turkey. I know steel could have done it but that was't the case.

How in the world does one mistake a star-crimped shot shell for a roll-crimp/standard slug ?

`Don't think I'd go upland field hunting w/ someone like that anytime soon.

He was older than my 73 years and thicker glasses. Got to watch shooters of all ages.

Went lake fishing on a foggy winter day. Lake partly frozen over. Old guy sitting there fishing, using a bobber.

The bobber was sitting on the ice. Blind as a bat. lol.

Looks like it may have had an obstruction in the choke, like maybe a wad from a previous shot or possibly a bit of dirt plug. Just conjecture at this point, glad no one was hurt at the time, except the turkey.

No I don't know what happened, bad metal, weakened with previous, incompatible loads?

Many of the tighter 'turkey Chokes' for a 12 ga are near .660" diameter, which can be tight if forgiving loads aren't used.

"...look work hardened..." You cannot see work hardening by just looking at it.
Like Kudu says, that bulge indicates it had an obstruction of some kind. Mind you, I had an 870 barrel I had cut down split without an obstruction. It had worked just fine with multiple rounds through on rapid(pins) too.

Bore obstruction. Probably a wad.
Due to the constriction of the choke, a gas seal can be "grabbed" and held because the gas system has vented some of the pressure, and the shot and carrier wad has exited the barrel.
If Remington didn't know something, they wouldn't have given a new barrel...

Remington knows that arguing with a customer with internet access is bad business. Even the stupidest arrogant ass won't usually trash you if you keep them happy.

I got my fist new shotgun as a teen(870). After taking it squrriel hunting the first time it fails to fully stroke rearward and wouldn't fire.

The gunsmith told me it was a paper wad inside the action.

A wad is my guess as well.

I had a choke tube split on the first 1187 i had back in 1992 it was about six months old was a mod choke and it split but did no damage to the threaded area, just replaced the mod choke in the set and never had another issue with the gun in 15 years and tens of thousands of rounds.
