I am thinking about getting a sporting clays 12 ga O/U for skeet and trap. Are there good guns out there for under $1000? If I can't get a name brand gun (Browning, Beretta, etc.), then I will probably go with plan A and buy a semi auto. I would consider something slightly used. Thanks for any thoughts.

A Ruger Red Label Sporting Clays is about $1200 as are the base guns from the other major makers.

If you are set on an O/U save a couple hundred more dollars and get one. Or find a used one probably for $800 to $1000 in the Ruger, Berreta, Browning Citori, or other brands that have low end quality guns for decent prices.
Try some out before you commit to buy. Many shooters will let you try out their guns if you get to be known at the gun clubs.

Might I suggest a Stoeger Condor? I don't know the patterning or such, but they do fit in your price range. You could even buy a 12ga AND 20ga in the Supreme Deluxe Model for that price.

Stoeger is sorta name brand. They are also, apparently, associated with Benelli and Franchi.

O/U

In a $800-900 range, take a look at the Fabarms model. CDNN has had them in their catalog.

Low end--$350-400--Baikal Russian IZH 27--I bought mine for less than $350 and am pleased.

Good doubles do not run cheap, cheap ones are rarely good. In your shoes, I suggest trying to find a used Beretta or Browning at the top end of your price range. If you change your mind, you're much more likely to get your money back than with a off brand.

Other decent brands include the Winchester 101 series and the SKBs. Try out a few and see what works for you.
