Need quick advice on a budget spotting scope. perferbly under $80 and it will be used for a 100 yrd bench rest so what magnification would be recomended? doesnt have to be fancy but want to be able to see target close up. thanks for any responses

At 100 yards bench rest shooting your rifle scope should be all you need. Its at longer ranges you'll need the spotting scope and an $80 one likely won't cut it.

Well the 4x16x40 rifle scope isn't good enough for me. And I know places like wal mart and academy have spotting scopes for like $ 60-$80. The only time I've used one I loved it.

I got a Barska 20-60x scope off of Amazon and have been happy with it. It was about $60, with a case and nice tabletop tripod.

More than enough for 100 yards.

The problem with any optic, particularly low priced ones is that they get dim and foggy at higher settings. 16x should be plenty to see most any bullet holes at 100. I can see .22 holes easily with my VX-3 set on 14x

Anyway, I have a Bushnell that I got maybe ten years ago. 20-60x IIRC and it's adequate but nothing great. Would work well for what you want. Was somewhere around $125 (I think)

I'd look at either Optics Planet, Amazon, or Ebay. Prices on optics are lower than when I bought mine

I use mine at the range. For 100 yards it's adequate. It's not gonna be a Swarovski or Leupold, but then it's not $1,000 or more. Like I said, if you crank up to 60x you can see the glass dim and lose clarity. That's what you're gonna get with low end optics.

I wanted the same thing. For $199.99 at OpticsPlanet, I picked up a Redfield "Revenge" spotting scope (zooms to 60X) and it's perfectly fine at 100 yards and further. I can easily see itty bitty .17 holes at 100 yards and farther.

Sure, you can use your riflescope at that range, but that's not what you're asking. For $200, it's a good deal. Nope, it's not top quality optics. Does it do the job? Yep. And more. And it's pretty good quality, comes with lens caps, case AND a small perfectly suited tripod.

Other thing you might try is posting an ad in the classifieds here and any other forums you frequent. I suspect there are a number of these sitting in closets unused
