Spring Field XD .40 loose rear sight

My buddy's father in law has a SF XD .40 with Trijicon sights. The rear sight is very loose (can be removed with fingers) the sight looks to be after market its fat and long. He said the brother in law droped it a bit ago. He gave it to me to sight in (not knowing the sight was loose). If the sight is after market can the dove tail be the wrong size?

Yes it is a factory option. I got it on my sub compact. It is definitly an aftermarket sight its a little bit wider and about 1/2 inch long with a single dot at the bottom of a boxed shaped rear sight. Also on the top it has heinie.

Springfield really has tight dovetails for sights so it is very possible that someone wanting to replace the stock rear sight had so much trouble removing the factory sight that he opened the dovetail so he could get a sight back in...just a thought as it is really difficult just to adjust the sights on these pistols. If that is the case how can I install new sights? Could I use High Strength Loc Tight?

Take it to a gunsmithy.
