Well... damn...

after taking apart the rifle last night, I noticed theres a significant gap between the handguard and the stock on the right side, probably 1/4 inch wide. I can see the internals of the rifle by looking thru the gap.

I dont remember seeing this, do you M1A owners experience this? Its with the POS synthetic stock. And of course, its starting to chip already after 5 days of ownership.

The gund does shoot great though, but damn... this huge gap is disheartening

Ive tried to twist and turn the stock to fill in the gap, but no such luck. I stopped by a local shop to see if it was suppose to be there, but the rifles on display did not show a gap between the handguard and stock.

...damn... :(

Any advise to get rid of the gap?

Yep. Kind of like looking at my ears, if you look at one side of the M1A you can see light on the other side.....

I like rifles just a little on the trashy side

On the bright side, at least your muzzle brake is straight :fire:

Thanks skunk for the reply.

Thres no light passing thru, but thats because the left side is completely sealed. But the right side is absolutely horrid! This actually I can see the opertating rod and the gas cylinder! CLEARLY!

***. :cuss:

I'm assuming it still looks wrong with the oprod forward, right? Check to see that the hanguard clip is engaged in the slot on the barrel.

FWIW, the handguard should never contact the stock.

Sam Adams,

this is the stock Springfield Armory synthetic stock w/ the krinkle finish, not one of fred's syn. stocks

30 cal,

The handguard clips is engaged in the barrel slot. The receiver is tight on the stocks, I have no clue what could be causing the gap. And its still driving me nuts!

Cuz for a $1300 rifle it should shoot straight AND not have any gaps/Bad asthetics.

Would you be mad if a Wilson Combat 1911 you bought came to you with bad uneven finish? It shoots great but for that much you've pad it should come out right from the factory to begin with.

I feel the same way about this rifle.

Heres the picture

You do not want the hand guard to touch the stock.

Except for the metal tab that touches the stock's forend tip the barrel assembly should free float.

You do seem to have a bit more of a gap than mine does though.

As for the crappy synthetic stock. IF they are using reburbished GI ones keep the stock and just remove that crinkle crap paint (no idea why they use that stuff) and repaint with either Krylon Camo Paints or Tester's military modeling spray paints, depending on the color you want.

If they are not get a GI one from Fred's. Cheaper Than Dirt used to have some at only about $18 but they went fast. Wish I'd bought 3-4 instead of just one.:(

When properly glass bedded these stocks work just as well as a McMillian, IMHO. Mine is an early NM M1-A which came with a over-sized walnut match stock. Since I bedded the action to a refurbbed GI surplus stock the walnut just gathers dust in the corner now.

I just got my SA M1A loaded synthetic the other day. Is the handguard supposed to be loose? Mine moves around a little which makes it feel flimsy. There are also two spots on the stock that aren't finished. The spots are both on the top on each side and fairly unnoticable so it doesn't really bother me much other than knowing I paid a lot for this. And finally is the rear of the receiver (on top just ahead of the buttstock where its stamped) is there supposed to be a small gap there between it and the stock?

Thanks

BTW- I do have a small gap between handguard and stock but not as much as the pic u posted. I checked various pictures on the SA website and it appears that the gap there varies from rifle to rifle/pic to pic.

Most rifles I've seen or had did have a gap there. While not that important it does not look good.

As long as the sides of the action are firmly seated down on the stock it should be OK.

I do however fill the gap by glass-bedding and even my original walnut match stock was done the same way by S.A.,.
