I was at a local gun shop today and saw a Springfield/Savage 511 SxS 12ga for $250. I thought it was a Stevens 311, but it definately wasn't. I've read that Stevens' are good durable guns. It's been cut down to 20" barrels and is in good shape overall. I've got the itch for a coach gun :D I can't find much info on this shotgun and would like some input on the quality and value of these guns and if they ever actually made a coach gun. Thanks.

Stevens once made a 311R, or riot gun, but I don't know of any 511 versions of it. The 511s I have seen were a bit nicer in the furniture/fit/finish department than the typical 311. I'd guess what you found is an aftermarket cut-down, either because someone damaged a barrel or because someone just wanted a good short shotgun. If it's mechanically sound, IMHO it's easily worth $250...

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it. I can't tell what the fixed chokes are and they're not marked on the barrels. I'm guessing the original chokes were full/mod. If the barrels are cut would they still be full/mod? How can I tell?

I'm always leery of cut down doubles, the fact is you don't Know were POI is unless you can pattern it which is the only way I'd buy even at $250.00

Since the choke is in the last couple of inches of the barrel, if the barrels are shortened, the chokes are cut off too. A bore gauge is about the only way to tell at this point, but AFAIK none of the older US made guns were made with short barrels and chokes. Some of the newer imported coach guns are choked, however.
