Springfield XD-9 for duty use...

Those finishes are every bit as delicate as the XD's... yet the SIG remains a top flight choice and the XD is degraded for it.

I agree George...there is a disparity. However it is one that I've not argued with the detractors of the HS/XD (falling on deft ears, and all that)!
I do believe that for Springfield to move to the next level with this pistol, this issue will need to be addressed.
The finish hasn't been that big a thing for me though, as this is a "working" gun and I expect it to acquire some character (as you can see). :)

Ahhhh George Hill....have you shot a Sig Pro?

"And much much better than the SIG Pro."

I have owned both and I can say that both are incredible guns....but the Sig Pro is deffinantly a Sig in every respect...smooth trigger, better than the P series IMHO and they eat recoil with the padded grip. The XD is a short trigger stroke but tend to dig into the pad of your finger a bit unless you take a nail file to the front of the trigger. I never had to do a thing to the Sig Pro. If you are speaking of 9mm....well....I dunno...the XD is a really accurate 9mm and I haven't shot the Sig Pro 2009 BUT the 2340 clearly outclasses the XD in accuracy smoothness and fit and finish. The polymer is so well crafted it looks like matte steel from more than a foot away. Therefore I agree and disagree with the above statement.

TRUE for 9mm....due to availability of high caps...

FALSE for the .40....in fit, finish, accuracy

Yeah, I handled a few SIG Pros. Admittedly they were earlier examples when the SIG Pro was still new.
I didn't like the feel of them and the trigger was, at the time evidently, very un-SIG-like. Maybe they have come up to the proper SIG level but I've not experienced that.

Frenchy is right again... Springfield needs to address the finish issue before the XD will really catch on across the board. And they could do it SO EASILY!
Just Powder Coat the slides and PRESTO CHANGO! New finish that is super tough and second to none and it's CHEAP to do. Look at that poly coat finish on these new CZ... seriously tough finish. No complaints there. These XDs have a dull/flat finish... make the new finish just a touch shiny so you can see the difference really easy... Lot's of people would line up for them. Ive heard more than one person say they would have got the XD if it wasn't for the finish.

Springfield needs to listen to this.

Of course, the XD is already available in a Stainless looking finish if your really concerned about delicate finishes... there you go.

I need to comment. My dept. has just authorized the Springfield XD for duty use as soon as the policy comes out on paper later this month. It will be on the approved list of weapons for individual deputy purchase. The Dept. is not going to replace the gun they issue to members, (Beretta 96D centurion or S&W 4006). All calibers offered in the XD are approved.

As far as the issue of Springfield's support with an armorers school, that has now happened and Springfield is looking to grab a slice of the Law enforcement pie with their entire product line.

The testing we have done does not reflect any malfunctions or problems that have not been documented with ANY of the other allowed handguns, Glock, S&W, Colt, Beretta, Ruger, Sig Sauer, ALL have had parts break, guns jam, magazine feed issues, bluing wearing, rust, even a few KB.

I had not heard about the Armorer's School!...That's wonderful news.
All of the major manufactures have a LE support system, so it's good to hear Springfield has taken that step.

"Yeah, I handled a few SIG Pros. Admittedly they were earlier examples when the SIG Pro was still new. I didn't like the feel of them and the trigger was, at the time evidently, very un-SIG-like."

The Sig Pro trigger will feel gritty until about 500 or 600 trigger pulls...then it smooths out nicely.

6000 rounds and counting through my XD Sub with NO problems at all. No finish wear problems either.

Most XD bashers tend to be Glock owners in my experience. Funny though, owning an XD doesn't make me want to bash Glocks at all.---Oneshot

Adding my $.02

I was hesitant about getting an XD. I have had Glocks and Sigs, and I felt the XD was uglier than Glock! It just seemed a bit too "blocky" for my taste. Mind you, I was just going on looks, having never handled one, nor had any desire to handle one. Then one night at our local IDPA match, I figured, "What the hell?" and asked to see one in the display case at the range. I couldn't believe how good it felt in my hand, or how naturally it pointed for me. To make a short story long, I ended up (first) getting an XD9 subcompact, followed a week later by an XD40. This past weekend, I worked out a trade with a buddy for an XD9 4". My Subcompact has a serial number in the 972XXX range, My XD40 s/n is 457XXX, and my "new" XD9 s/n is 9XXX. I don't know if the s/n's are materially different between models, but assuming higher numbers mean newer guns, I have to say that the finish on all three guns is still almost perfect. My buddy had carried the XD9 as an off-duty piece, and there is no visible wear on the finish at all. I am VERY impressed with these guns.

I work in armored transport as an ATM repairman, and in that capacity I carry a Glock 22, mostly because it is the weapon our company allows us to purchase through our company plan. I don't have to carry it, but I do because it is what 95% of our employees carry, and I've had it the longest. But I'm thinking at my next qualification cycle, the XD40 will be getting the nod. I've only been able to shoot the XD40 so far, and only 125 rounds through it, but I would not hesitate to reach for it in a SHTF scenario.

been carrying a xd-40 for a while. No complaints other than the change-over to heinie straight eight sights drove my gun smith nuts as the factory sights were a bear to get out. Been carrying it in a Hume security two holster. Does show very rapid holster wear to the finish but I can live with it.

I own both a Glock 20 and a XD40, if the XD came out in a 10mm I would drop the Glock in a heartbeat, the only thing I like about the glock 20 is the caliber. My XD 40 has never missed a beat, The gun shop I work at part time cant get enough of them in. We have never had anyone come back dissapointed in it.

XD

I haven't shot this gun but would like to. I think............

If SA had kept the price down at the HS2000 level, it could have knocked Glock from the market. As is, Glock is too firmly entrenched now with a comparable price.

If the XD and Glock had come out at the same time, I think more LEOs would be carrying them.

If they could bring out a 5" barrel .45, for less than $450 I think they'll sell a million of them.

If they could stiffen their frame / slide rail system a bit they could avoid the "first round flyer" issue I keep hearing about.

Any one have any data or thought on this last comment? All of the gun rags that have reviewed this pistol have mentioned the issue with the plastic rails. Are they just trying to please the Glock ad execs?

I had to dig this old thread out while doing a search on XD-9 finish wear.I am waiting for a Fobus holster to arrive and wanted to know if anyone has used a Fobus and if so how fast does it scrape off the XD's finish?Thanks.tom.

I have a 4" V10 40, 4" 40, 4" 9mm HS, and a 5" 9mm. I love them all. I carry the 9mm HS the most though. It is my throw around gun. It takes everything I can give it and just keeps working.

This is kind of an oldy

I agree that the fobus is hard on the finish on XDs. I have been using my XD40 for USPSA competitions and have seen a fair amount of finish wear on my slide. It is going to be heading to Canyon Creek for some custom work in the next month or two so it will get refinished with Gun Kote in Silver.
