I am interested in getting into IDPA and USPSA shooting.

I have a Springfield XDm in 9mm. I downloaded the rule book for each and have some questions.

IDPA:

Limited to 10 rounds per magazine.

Can I complete in the following divisions?

Stock Service Pistol
Enhanced Service Pistol?? I haven't been able to figure out the difference between the two divisions.

Can I use the plastic holster and magazine holder that came with the pistol?

USPSA:

Can I complete in the following divisions?

Open Division: no limit for rounds in the magazine.
Limited Division: no limit for rounds in the magazine, but limited to minor due to 9mm.
Limited-10 Division: limited to 10 rounds per magazine, but limited to minor due to 9mm.
Production Division: limted to 10 rounds per magazine.

Can i use the plastic holster and magazine holder that came with the pistol?

One of the local ranges has both clubs at it, just on alternating weekends, so I thought I might try both.

Thanks for any help.

You can compete in USPSA open, limited, limited 10 & production divisions with your XDM. It will not be competitive in any division other than Production. Limited and limited 10 rules are designed around 1911 platforms in .40 caliber. The 9mm will be handicapped. Open is designed around hot loaded .38 or 9mm rounds in compensated 1911 platforms with red dot sights.

Production is geared to 9mm striker fired and double action service pistols. So compete there.

I can't give any advice about IDPA. I have never shot it.

The included holster and magazine carrier are acceptable.

Two magazines on the belt are all you get (or need) for IDPA but for IPSC/USPSA you will need more ammo ready to hand.

As said, the XD family was originally promoted as single action and therefore are allowed only in IDPA ESP. USPSA cut them some slack and let them enter Production along with Glocks, etc.

The holster is NOT acceptable in IDPA if you can see a sliver of light thru the belt channel.

I've heard of people at a major match having one guy behind them with a flashlight, another in front looking for that tell tale "gamey" sliver of light.

The mag pouch must be 2" deep as measured from the rear of the magazines top round.

Silly rules, but that's what they are for now.

IDPA vs XD-M gear

The XD and XDM mag pouches are "NOT" acceptable in a sanctioned
IDPA match. I just shot the 2009 Florida State match and got snagged
for the mag pouch. It is not legal due to the forward and rear cant
of the pouch design. The mags have to be held within 10 degrees
of vertical.
Fobus for one makes a pouch that works with IDPA and holds the
XD - XDM mags.
FYI

Don, did they put a protractor on it? What nitpicking. I was there and did not see any such petty stuff.

David, that is even worse nitpicking. I belive there have been some guidelines on just how precious and precise a SO should be on holster clearance and getting behind the shooter with a flashlight is way too much. About like using a scoring gauge on the targets.

The OP will not likely see such nonsense at a club match as he might go to at the start.

State Match and gear

The rules are printed pretty clear about the cant on the mag pouch.
The only issue I had was that another shooter on our squad was also
using the same XD pouch and didn't get a mention.
But let me tell you the best part....without even a second hesitation
a whole group of guys in the squad waiting to shoot the course went
thru their gear in a hurry and came up with a mag pouch that they
quickly got into my hands for use for the rest of the match.
You just gotta love the brotherhood of shooters.

I understand the rule on magazine pouch cant, but I was just wondering how they concluded the XD freebie exceeded ten degrees. Protractor or eyeball? I will see if I can borrow one and take an actual measurement.
And uneven application of that or any rule is damaging to the sport.

I asked a friend of mine who has those mag pouches in her "spares" bin to dig them out and check them. Her protractor says they're dead on 10 deg.

And that makes them LEGAL -- until and unless HQ says they aren't. It's too bad that the folks in FL made a fuss about it. Puts a bad light on the sport in general.

P.S. -- Could even be that Springfield has heard of IDPA and realized that the gear they sell as part of their competition package probably aught to conform to the rules... Just a thought.

XD-9 Compact

I shoot IDPA with my 9mm Compact. It has a very short sight radius for the long stations over 25 feet. I did not buy it to be a range gun, it's for CC use if needed. Dance with who you brung. IDPA shooters as the greatest folks at my club, helpful, ready to share equipment, non judgmental on equipment or hair style :))

The XDM ammo pouch is defintely legal as can be seen in this image of the pouch superimposed on to an image of the protractor - within 10 degrees!

Thanks for the visual proof. That's exactly what my friend and I measured months back.

Since then, I've aquired an xDM 9mm myself, and really do like the free equipment that came with it. I've no plans to change any of it. In fact, I just Classified into ESP Expert with it on Saturday, so I couldn't be happeir! :)

Wow! that quite a large picture! That must be for the visually impared shooters among us!

I used my CR Speed Versa pouches. I used foam tape to build up the Glock insert and it worked great.

My problem with the XDm 9 is that the magazines are so hard to break down and clean. Not good when you've just shot a fast stage and are with a small squad. People get a little irritated with you if you spend more time cleaning your mags than you do taping and resetting.

Not only that, I just never felt comfortable with the XDm 9. I didn't like the grip or the flip.
