I bought one of these little Spyderco's at the Fun Show here in Dale City on Sunday. No box, No paperwork but its never cut anything (yet).... maybe a display. Guy had it bagged up in a ziplock bag with $50.00 on it and since everthing on his table was 1/2 price, I figured I needed a new knife. I mean an all stainless Spyderco for $25.00...

At any rate I get home and try to look up the model on the web site and Spyderco states that the blade should be AUS-8 but mine is clearly marked ATS-55 (SEKI-CITY Japan).

I looked around at the usual knife discounters and apparantly I got a pretty good price. I see that some of them are advertised as ATS-55 and some AUS-8.

Curious if anyone knows when and why they changed the blade material.
thanks
Will

you got pics? i believe you have the knife, but it might be a counterfeit. if it's not, you're the luckiest summbody ever. pics would help find out if hit the jackpot. either way, it's a cool design, and i want one.

these two are fake:

these are real:

to be honest, i'd pay $25 bucks for a fake, and pay the full price for a real one. i'd carry the fake one, so if i lose or break it, i won't cry. i bought a counterfeit version of a kershaw leek, and it's good enough to cut apples or sharpen pencils with. when it breaks, i won't care, because my real one will still be nice.

Dragonfly, not Spyderfly.

Many knives in their line switched over about 1999 or 2000 if I remember right. I think the Dragonfly might have been a bit later, but I'd have to dig out some old catalogs to make sure. The current blade steel is listed as VG-10, but I wouldn't worry about the ATS-55. I don't have any knives in that right now, but I really liked it in the past.

Great knife at a great price. I've really come to like my Cricket as a tie clip.

Yes it is the small lockback folder not the ballisong (althou I DO want one of them as well).

This is the one I bought.

Spyderco's site does indeed does say it is VG-10, but some of the other Dragonfly models say AUS-8 blades and then there are still some older ones (I guess) made out of ATS-55 floating around out there at the discount dealers.

WOW, Counterfit Spyderco's?? I'd have never guessed any of them were valuable enough to fake.

No doubt my new one is legit. Everything is identical to an older (mid 1990's) Endura I have, just smaller. The quality is evident. Stamped "Spyderco ATS-55" on one side of the blade and "SEKI-CITY Japan' on the other side. The pocket clip is embossed/engraved/stamped with the Spyderco logo.
Thank you both for the reply :)

I was a bit confused at seeing the Spyderfly, as well. :)

I've given Dragonflies to a couple of friends, but the FRN version. Good, very size-efficient knives.

I have a stainless Dragonfly myself. I love this little Spyderco. Lot of blade in a little package.

I would not recommend paying ANY amount of money for a counterfeit product EVER! Counterfeiting hurts the legitimate companies. If you financially hrut the complanies that are bringing out the leading cutting edge designs soon there won't be cutting edge companies or they won't have the funds to introduce new designs.

Also think if they have no qualms about counterfeiting a design, why would you think they would not cut corners EVERYWHERE! You would be silly to think that it would be made of good materials... good materials cost more money!

Please do not support these companies!

Tom

I'm confused as well. Pvk and Knifezilla are the same company, but they're selling both real and counterfeit Spydercos? Since online/mailorder doesn't afford you the opportunity to inspect the knife, what to do?

Tom has made a good point everyone should listen to. By purchasing a counterfeit you are hurting the company you admire so much, but don't want to pay to support. Save your money for the real thing and you'll be better off personally (I've never met a counterfeit as good as the product it is copying) and you won't be supporting thieves (which is what the Chinese knockoff producers are).
