Looking at bass pro websites other day and I saw a squirrel call I've seen one just wondering how good they would work or is it jus something to spend money on. Thanks

I a friend of mine bought one several years ago and it turned out to be a waste but who knows ymmv! I've killed lots of them without one.

Used on for a few years but did not have any luck calling squirrels in. My youngest son however, using the same call said he has good luck with it in causing a squirrels to stop and look, thereby persenting a shot.

I used to put a quarter in between my thumb and index finger and hit it with another quarter....sounds a lot like a squirrel working away at an acorn. I killed squirrels, so it may have been working

I use the Knight & Hale call for the barks and distress call. I only use the barks as a all clear signal if I shoot. This will keep the squirrels closer, not run as far. When it's really dead I use the baby distress call. It has worked every time I have used it. But I only using it sparingly. My main caller is 2 quarters. I have learned how to make the proper sounds to attract them. The best way to perfect this is in a city park where the squirrels are thick.

Now using the calls takes some practice to get it down right. It took me a good month to get good with the call and that was practicing every day. The grays and reds have a different call but the distress is the same.

I had a bark call years ago and did end up calling one squirrel. Quite a few years ago I gave in and bought a "Mr Squirrel" whistle call. I agree; they are a total waste of money....and time.

Back when I used to hunt, I just used my mouth and palm, making a smacking sound that sounded like a squirrel bark. Always worked for me - squirrels came to see what the ruckus was all about and I would pop them with a 22 CB cap.

I used a Haydels Mr. Squirrel call when I was a much younger man. It mimics the sound of a baby squirrel in distress. You make a sound like a scuffle in the leaves while using it. Sounded kinda strange, but it worked like a champ on the fox squirrels in my hometown area.

I have a diaphragm type call that I tied to a lanyard that hangs around my neck. Though I don't use it much for squirrel hunting, I use it to pass the hours sitting in a tree waiting for Mr. Deer during big game season. I've spoken to several squirrels, usually a monologue never a dialogue. It gives them pause, but doesn't really bring them in any closer.

I have seen a number of devices that call squirrels out of the woods like a Walt Disney movie. They are called deer feeders but the racket they make throwing corn out is like nothing I have seen for bringing in the little rascals.

Anytime I need a squirrel to pause it's movement a moment, I just whistle at it quietly. Works good so far.

Didn't know you could call squirrels though. Last time I went hunting, I spooked the squirrels. So I laid down for a 20 minute nap in the leaves, woke up and was surrounded by them. Felt like I was in a shooting gallery!

Had one of dem lil' critters crawl up my pant leg when I napped under a tree one afternoon---nearly soiled myself! :what:

Don't buy a call unless it makes you feel like your getting more out of your hunt. Ive never once used a call on squirrels. What you can do is listen while your hunting, and learn to make the same calls they do with clicks. If you get good, you can learn to have verbal fights with them which is always fun :) Just set on a good still day (wind is not good for squirrels), preferably at dusk or dawn, and wait. Sometimes it takes a bit for them to come back out after you walk into your spot. Ive taken hundreds of squirrels this way.

I tried a squirrel caller yesterday . I didn't see the first squirrel . I think that it had too do more with the wind, the cold and snow on the ground than the call .

A squirrel call will not entice them to come to you. Sometimes the distressed baby squirrel call, but that's not a sure thing.

But they are useful in a limited capacity. If you know there is a squirrel there but cannot quite exactly locate him, use a call. He won't get any closer, but he may answer the call. Your advantage lies in the fact that a squirrel cannot vocalize without flipping his tail.

Never had any luck with a call. I'm not sure our our local grays know they are supposed to come running when they hear what sounds like something killing another squirrel. (that strike anyone else as a bad survival strategy). I've heard that fox squirrels are a bit dumber than grays, so it might work with them, but they aren't as common around here, and neither of the two I have shot were called in.

IMO, a 'cutter' call is very useful. After a shot, the call calms the other squirrels and gets them back to searching for acorns/nuts.

Just do the serriated coin trick and it works just fine with only one serriated coins so u can use a dime and nickle, quarter and nickle...even a penny will work for one coin.

>>Best thing I've found to find squirrels is go to deer hunting. Never fails.<<

That is so true it is painful to remember last years archery season. It got so frustrating that I would sit waiting for a deer until I got cold or tired of sitting then walk back to the truck and exchange my bow for my squirrel gun. But usually found the squids were no longer moving. Happened most every time.

Best thing I've found to find squirrels is go to deer hunting. Never fails. :)
Ain't that the truth. last time I went bow hunting. I thought I would be smart and put one of those blunt rubber "small game" tips on one of my arrows. That way(I thought) if all I saw was squirrels, I would be ready. Sure enough, the only critters to make a showing that day were the bushytails. After I got fed up with waiting for a deer, I grabbed the blunt arrow and let fly at a squirrel on a branch not 10 feet away. Arrow nailed the little sucker right in front of the shoulder, knocking him to the ground... from where he promptly ran right back up to the same branch I knocked him off of and proceeded to scold me while I went looking for my arrow.
