Just sharing...Took my recently acquired Anschutz 1502 Mach 2 to the squirrel woods this week. It proved to be a fantastic squirrel rifle. I killed my limit of squirrels with all but one being head shots. And they go down with a resounding thump. The missed head shot was also the longest shot, maybe 75 yards; I hit his shoulder. Not bad for an old man who has hunted squirrels for 60 years. What rifle do you hunt squirrels with?

ahh I love squirrel hunting

well if it still bushed out on the trees then I use a shotgun, but once the leaves have fallen off the trees, I use a henry leveraction 22 with 40gr Remington thunderbolt solid nose bullets! :D :neener:

An old Ruger 10/22 I bought new in 71. Last year I put a scope on it to accomodate my 66 year old eyes, but I still get good head shots and do not come home empty handed.

savage 93r17 ---> will never buy savage again. i understand they are good guns but this particular model does not have the accutrigger (intentions to install an accutrigger but you can't because the receiver is different), horrible trigger, seems cheaply made, the plastic edges are roughly cut, gun jams and misfires, magazine misfeeds and pops rounds out, other than that, very accurate. i had better luck/reliability hunting with my 22lr converted ar15 with cci stingers.

my next squirrel gun would be a marlin in .17 hmr. i like savage's action (slicker and easier to work) but marlin has better quality. my cousin bought one shortly after mines and he has the same feeding issues.

Hey Everyone,

Went again yesterday and shot 4. Missed a couple of slam dunk shots, which amused me. It is good to be reminded that even after 60 years of hunting squirrels I can still get excited and shoot too quickly. The best of rifles will not forgive an impulsive shot. But, the other bit of good news, I hunted a farm I had never been to before so I can add it to the list of great places to go. This the perfect time of year to hunt, so I'll be out there again in a couple of days.

I took a rifle out a few weekends ago but I was not able to take an ethical shot due to all the squirrels being straight up. I went to the same spot yesterday with my shotgun and got one bushytail. I hope to use the rifle in a few more weeks when the squirrels are hanging out lower!!

I have a Marlin 60 22lr with tech sights and an XT-22 with a scope. I'd be happy to use either!

Well my good fortune continues. I've had 3 squirrel hunts so far this fall and killed 6,4, and 5 respectively for a total of 15 squirrels. That is in 2 locations in different counties. This morning I was alone and what a beautiful day it was. The day started with a gloomy forecast, but since I don't hesitate to hunt squirrels in rainy weather, I went anyway. I can't recall the last time I saw and heard so many squirrels. Must have been 25-30 of them. The moist forest floor made for quiet stalking. I usually sit by oak and walnut trees and wait for them to show up, but they were exceptionally vocal this morning and readily revealed their locations. So with stealth made easier by the soft forest floor, I stalked all 5 of them. Along the way, I spooked several deer and heard many more snorting at me a short distance away. And the Mach 2 performed as I have come to expect and appreciate at each outing.

17m2 is my all time favorite rimfire. For hunting/plinking, I use it exclusively. With the exception of taking the grandkids out, I parked all my .22's many years ago. Squirrel hunting is my favorite rimfire hunting. I have a TC carbine and a Marlin 917 in 17m2.
