There have been several debates and Hissy Fits about ammo types. So I thought I would share with you what I learned some time ago.

Stack that Mag!

Load that home defense gun or hip hugger by alternating rounds with a stagger load of a JHP then a FMJ then another JHP and then another FMJ and so one.

This will give you the advantage of the best of both worlds. This way you can be ready for a Zombie attack or Tin Foil Wrapped Space Invaders or even a pissed off attack stray cat.

No need to IBM or MIT it...common sense works just fine!

I always love this statement because it completely overlooks the fact that you also get the worst of both worlds.
 
I've read of folks doing so, but never felt the need. I read of one guy who used a shotshell as the first round. I guess that would be okay if I had a mouse problem.
 
With 237 posts in 10 days, my guess is Pappers doesn't have time to think things through very much.
 
The only gun I do that with is my .32 Guardian. After reading umpteen debates on it I didn't think there was ever a definitive answer for that caliber so I dutch load. For major calibers, JHP for SD and FMJ for range work. I don't ever foresee my need for maximum penetration in an SD role so prefer something that has a chance to expand. And if it doesn't expand then it acts as a FMJ anyway.

Rat shot to the face is very effective and it won't get you charged with murder by some liberal leaning judge either. If they run away.....WHOO AHHHH! Mission Accomplished.

Frankly, I see no valid reason to do this. Id even go as far as saying that its a bad idea. If you want to keep both FMJ and JHP around for HD, might I suggest simply loading the primary mag with JHP and the secondary mag with FMJ. But, staggering them within the same mag? Nah. Besides, JHP is superior for home defense so why hinder this ability by mixing in FMJ within the same mag?

Same thing goes for the shotgun. But, this isnt about the SG, so I wont elaborate.

All joking aside, bad advice. For reasons posted above.
Similarly poorly thought out is using rat shot as your first round - in an automatic pistol many times they won't cycle the slide, therefore won't load a second round, therefore you'll be dealing with what amounts to a fail-to-feed jam while a very pissed off aggressor is danger close.

That works, because it would isolate failures to one magazine.
Wouldn't it be fun to have your staggered mag filled with every other round from a bad batch?

No thanks, I'll just keep my primary mag loaded with Gold Dots and my reload loaded up with some other commercial HP round that feeds well in my pistol (which is pretty much everything, thankfully). The only thing I might load with FMJ for defense if my old Walther P.1, which does duty as a HD pistol once in a while ... and even it feeds Gold Dots, assuming I have extra in stock!

This is a scary thought! I think by the second "dammit" one would find themselves in a precarious place to be sure.

I used to do the one mag JHP/one mag FMJ thing (never mixed ammo in one mag though...yuk). Didnt bother me as my chosen HD gun ate them both reliably and heck, I saved a few bucks. But, now I load the primary with standard pressure JHPs and the secondary with +P JHP (since I find these hinder my accuracy somewhat and are more prone to failure).

Whoa there, pump the brakes and get a handle on the actual workings of the legal system.

Also, I'd imagine people that recommend anything but slugs/buck to the COM are in the minority. Birdshot to the face doesn't sound like a good idea at all.

In the last 3 days, I have seen too much bad advice coming from him and it's enough already.
 
I have 2 mags, each 17 rounds. One has hollowpoints, the other FMJ. I feel that staggering a mag is like mixing 2 beers in the same glass. Yes, it is beer, but usually different flavors.

YMMV.
