Anyone familiar with stag arms? I have a urge to get a left hand ar type rifle, because I am tired of the brass and crap flying in front of my face. As far as I know stag arms is the only co. that makes a left hand ar type rifle? It would be a defense, non-hunting rifle for when things hit the fan. Would the 6.8mm be more effective than the 5.56 ? I know it cost more for the ammo but would it be worth it. Come on guys I need your input.

Stag Arms is one of the best out there. My personal favorite, because it is such a great value.

As for the 6.8, I'd avoid it. It's never gonna be as popular and affordable as 5.56.

With better pried ammo, you can practice more, if you can practice more YOU can be more effective.

Therefore, I believe an AR15 in 5.56 is the best choice for most people out there.

Don't they make them in 6.5G too?

I have a line on a 5.56mm version for $800. Is that a good deal?

stag, very good, makes a lot of stuff for everybody else. until the 6.5 grendel becomes common, go with the 556. that way, when the ammo becomes plentiful from wolf, everything else stays the same , from the 556; same mags, same lowers, same bolt, carrier, etc. just change the upper/ bbl.

Big R;

I'm building my EBR by getting the major components from Stag. Of course, it could be said that they're the only way to go if you're not afflicted with right handedness. Or, at the very least, have a left master eye.

Things are proceeding along without much angst, befuddlement, or blood. However, my son makes gagging noises as he's not a proponent of the platform, but he does help explain things as I build. He's a 10 year veteran of Uncle Sam's version of the Big Green Boy Scouts & as such is moderately familiar with the whole AR thing. I'm currently awaiting the left specific parts for the upper to show up.

If you like 6.8mm (and it is a great round), I'd recommend getting a 5.56mm upper as well, unless you reload in bulk. As RockyMtnTactical noted, 5.56mm ammo is just much cheaper and available for range work, etc.

BigR,

I'm in the same boat as you, however, I'm pretty set on the 6.8mm (left handed of course) because I would like to use mine as a backup deer rifle (in case I bump the scope out of wack on my hunting rifle durring the season or something dumb like that). And yes I am very aware that the 6.8 is expensive and hard to get.

So are the Stag Arms lowers interchangeable with the 556 and 6.8mm uppers?
If so why does stag arms charge you an extra $15 for the 6.8mm lowers?

I think you're wrong here, you need a different bolt and different magazines for the 6.5 Grendel just like you would for the 6.8 SPC. Better to just have two different complete uppers.

Other than the markings, 5.56MM and 6.8 SPC lowers are identicle I don't know why Stag charges more. We have lots of Silver State and Hornady 6.8SPC ammo in our local shops. Some of the Silver State stuff is discounted to $12.00 a box.

Isn't that contradictory??? If you needed a different magazine then I would assume the lower would be built differently...I have never handled a 6.8 SPC so I am only speculating:rolleyes:

No. I run PRI 6.8mm steel mags through a standard Rock River lower with zero problems or issues. The same mags will fit into the M4A1 Uncle Sam provides me as well without any issues asd well. The same holds true of Grendel magazines -- any AR lower can run them. (That's the point with both rounds -- their dimensions are specifically so that they can fit through an AR magwell and be used with an AR lower.) The magazines differ in terms of followers and feed lips, not overall dimensions as they relate to the mag well.

My guess would be Stag is charging a bit more for a 6.8mm lower because they're doing something related to the buffer and/or buffer spring to deal with the more powerful round, but could be wrong.

So if your a south paw looking for a AR in both the 5.56 and 6.8SPC (5.56 for plinking, and 6.8SPC for hunting) You'd need the following:

1 - 6.8SPC lower (the one that costs an additional $15 so it can 'handle' the 6.8SPC)
1 - 6.8 SPC Upper and associated mag(s)
1 - 5.56 Upper and associated mags(s)

And you'd be all set right?

Not at all contradictory. The basic external dimensions are the same as the 5.56MM magazines. As mentioned the follower and feed lips have been tweaked. They are also made out of steel instead of aluminum to prevent the bigger 6.8 SPC case from "bulging: the magazine.

You can take a 6.5Grendel or 6.8 SPC upper and mate it up with any standard 5.56MM AR15 lower. I was just pointing out that it's not just a matter of swapping barrells as was implied earlier.

Ammo Price Difference

Don't worry about it - if the 5.56 pricing trend continues, in another year they will cost the same :)

(assuming 6.8 or 6.5G don't increase at the same rate)
